Johannesburg - The Eastern Province Kings are still the only undefeated side in this season's Currie Cup First Division after they secured a convincing 49-6 victory over the Border Bulldogs in their match played at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Friday.
It was the Port Elizabeth side's sixth consecutive victory of the 2010 competition as they maintained their status at the top of the First Division log after six games. The EP Kings are currently on 28 log points and are eight clear of the second-placed SWD Eagles (20) who has a game in hand.
The Border Bulldogs who suffered their fourth defeat in this season's competition are in fourth position on the log with 11 points.
EP Kings flank Jacques Potgieter scored a brace of tries as his team ran in six tries against their Eastern Cape opponents. Paul Perez, Gerrie Odendaal, Milo Nqoro and former Blue Bulls fullback Tiger Mangweni added the other five-pointers for the hosts.
Jaco van Schalkwyk kicked four conversions and three penalties while former SA Sevens captain Mzwandile Stick converted one try. The Border Bulldogs' points were scored as a result of two penalty kicks by Logan Basson.
Basson (54) is in third position in the First Division's leading points' scorers standings. He is however six points behind the SWD Eagles' Ambrose Barends (60), who is currently in first place and one point behind the Griffons' Johann Myburgh who is in second position on 55. Myburgh added six conversions and one penalty for the Griffons as his side secured their third victory during their 69-30 win over the Valke at the Barnard Stadium in Kempton Park.
Fourteen tries were scored in this match that yielded 99 points as a result of both teams playing some open, running rugby.
The Griffons added 10 tries with former Free State Cheetahs player JW Jonker scoring a hat-trick. The visitors' other tries were scored by Werner Griesel (2), Eddie Fredericks, Hendrik van der Nest, Kevin Stevens, Thabang Molefe and Enrico Schultz. Barry Goodes also kicked two conversions.
Jonker, who previously represented the SA Sevens during the 2009/ 2010 IRB Sevens World Series, is the leading try-scorer with six tries.
Kyle Hendricks (2), Jaco Snyman and Shone van der Walt added tries for the Valke while Martin Thomsen kicked two conversions. Valke prop Jacques George also notched up two penalty kicks for the hosts.
