Cape Town – Duane Vermeulen will captain Western Province in the Currie Cup this year.
Coach Allister Coetzee announced on Monday that No 8 Vermeulen and scrumhalf Dewaldt Duvenage (vice-captain) would lead the side.
However, there is still uncertainty over who will lead the side at Newlands on Saturday.
Vermeulen is still recovering from a serious knee injury and is expected to be sidelines for another four to five weeks. Duvenage is also still struggling with the leg injury that sidelined him for the last few weeks of Super Rugby.
“We don’t know yet whether Dewaldt will be ready to play on Saturday. We will therefore only announce the captain for the starting line-up against Griquas on Thursday,” said Coetzee.
The coach added that he was not too concerned about the uncertainty.
“We have a number of players in the squad who have captained teams in the past. Players like Tiaan (Liebenberg), Deon (Fourie) and Pieter Louw have that kind of experience.”
Coetzee said that the leadership of senior players is one of WP’s strengths. “You always want good decision-makers in your team.”
He is also satisfied with the depth at his disposal. The bad news that Rynhardt Elstadt’s injured knee will sideline him for three months is viewed as an opportunity for De Kock Steenkamp.
“De Kock has been waiting for his opportunity for a long time. Adriaan Fondse, Hilton Lobberts, Eben Etzebeth and Quinn Roux are also locks who can play a part,” said Coetzee.
The one position in which the Cape side struggled with their depth towards the end of the Super Rugby tournament was flyhalf. Lionel Cronjé and Kurt Coleman are not yet ready, but Gary van Aswegen will play against Griquas.
“Our focus has shifted from Super Rugby to the new challenge. I also don’t think that we failed in the Super Rugby tournament. The Reds had to wait for 16 years before they could win the trophy again,” said Coetzee.
