Drotske ups war talk

2012-10-18 14:02

Bloemfontein - Free State Cheetahs coach Naka Drotske says his side will not hand their place in the Currie Cup competition on a silver platter to the Eastern Province Kings in their promotion/relegation game in Bloemfontein on Friday evening.

The teams meet for the first of two promotion/relegation games on Friday evening at the Free State stadium before heading to Port Elizabeth a week later.

The Kings will be looking to gain momentum in the City of Roses and deal the final blow at home, but it will not be easy against a highly motivated Cheetahs outfit.

"The players know that it is of the utmost importance that we pull off the win," Drotske said.

"The Kings are eager to play in the Currie Cup so we are well aware of the threat they pose, but we're not going to hand our place in the competition to them on a silver platter.

"The players are switched on and there is a new intensity within the camp, so we're ready for the challenge."

The Kings have shown throughout their campaign in the First Division of the Currie Cup they are the side to beat, finishing their season unbeaten and claiming the title by beating the Pumas in the final.

"We play at a different level than the Kings, but we know they will be motivated," he said.

"We must ensure that they don't get their game plan going.

"They are a well balanced side with a good forward pack and their back three is also very dangerous.

"We wouldn't want to give them any space on the attack and will be looking to slow down their possession as well."

Kings captain and centre Wayne Stevens believed his side's unbeaten record will come in handy against a Cheetahs side that has only won three of their 10 Currie Cup group games this season.

"We are unbeaten thus far and when you get used to that, it's something you want to keep on doing," Stevens said.

"We've gained a lot of momentum by claiming the First Division title and the team is motivated to play Currie Cup. It is definitely something that counts in our favour."

Even though the hosts have the odds stacked against them, Stevens believed the Kings will have to throw everything at the hosts if they want to be in the better position come the second encounter.

"We know what position the Free State Cheetahs are in and that makes them a dangerous side," he said.

"We have to make the step-up, because they've played in a much stronger competition.

"It will be a tougher challenge than we've been involved in before.

"You're only as good as the last game you played and therefor we need to be up there."

  • riaan.vanniekerk.5 - 2012-10-18 15:15

The Kings will taste the bitter reality of them not belonging on the same field as the weakest currycup side let alone the super 15 teams...

  • Shaun.Swanepoel79 - 2012-10-18 15:17

Well considering that the cheetahs were one of the unions that voted for EP Kings to get a free pass the the S15, I think that they should not have been given the chance to play a Relegation match against EP. It would have been Justice to just regulate the Cheetahs and place EP kings in their place instead. Why do that for the S15 and not the currie cup. (double standard). Since thats not the case, this will probably be the only two matches where I will support a team that was given opportunities without deserving them. GO EP!!!! lets hope justice is served.

      philip.spies - 2012-10-18 15:36

Can you really blame the Cheetahs for voting the Lions out of the Super 15? The Kings were going to get their place regardless of who had to make space. If the Cheetahs had voted to keep the Lions in, they would have had to combine with the Lions again to form the Cats. They were looking after their own interests. If the Cheetahs had ended last, the Lions would have done the same.

      Shaun.Swanepoel79 - 2012-10-18 16:01

I don't hold only the cheetahs responsible for this. I am from WP and i'm ashamed that the management here did not have the backbone to stand up to SARU. I think WP rugby union management bring disgrace to Newlands and I will be screaming for the Lions this weekend. I get what you saying but this is bigger then just one union. I think a bad president has been set here.

  • roy.wadhams.1 - 2012-10-18 15:22

C'mon Cheetahs,as a WP/Stormers supporter I hope you give the Watson's/EP Kings a thrashing. I can bet you that all there are many supporters from all over that wish you the best.

      suidlander.vanwyk - 2012-10-18 19:47

no there arent except idots in these blogs i mean retards here, I'll be laughing boys next year when we beat your useless cupless loosers, chockers, clowns of note

  • philip.spies - 2012-10-18 15:33

Breaking News!!!! Cheetah team, coaches and management to be arrested for planning the biggest regicide in human history... R.I.P Kings

  • Theo Ferreira - 2012-10-18 15:39

What is so important or relevant about the Kings making it into the premier league? After all they are playing S15 next year, all they have to do is finish last and beat the Lions in a supposed/potential promotion/relegation match to keep their status. Playing in the currie cup is apparently not a prerequisite....lol...

      luke.sportify - 2012-10-19 09:31

Playing in the Premier Division against better opposition will fill the stands a bit more and improve EP's Rugby

    GO EP!!!!!

  • nico.eksteen.7 - 2012-10-19 03:24

I may be wrong but these promotion/relegations games are going to turn out nothing affairs in the long run. Point is the Kings already got what they wanted, to play in the Super series next year. So, in all honesty I do not think the EP really cares whether they will be playing in the A-section of the CC next year as they will be concentrating on Super rugby which will keep their top players busy for the biggest part of the season. Also, I have a feeling that all 14 rugby provinces will be competing in the premier CC section sooner than later. With the CC becoming a watered =down affair, I think the Vodacom Cup will be scrapped and all 14 provinces competing in the CC from February to October in a double round (home/away).

      suidlander.vanwyk - 2012-10-19 07:19

Nico I agree, I said it before and I will say it again CC is no longer what it used to be, its just an upgraded version of Vodacom cup

  • juan.nel.16 - 2012-10-19 08:48

At least the Cheetahs got a relegation match!!! Go LIONS

  • luke.sportify - 2012-10-19 09:27

Go EP Kings, you deserve to be in the playoffs Won 84% of your games over the past 4 years You may not beat the Cheetahs this year but I am sure you will give them a game EP to beat Griquas next year to make it to the Currie Cup Premier League To all you Kings haters, go F yourselves You should be hating SARU not E rugby

      smallies - 2012-10-19 16:12
