Fourie to lead young WP side

Herman Mostert

Cape Town - Hooker Deon Fourie has been chosen to captain a youthful-looking Western Province side to take on Griquas at Newlands in their first ABSA Currie Cup match of the season.

Fourie will captain the side until newly appointed captain, Duane Vermeulen - and vice-captain, Dewaldt Duvenage, return from their injuries.

Vermeulen seriously injured his knee during the Stormers' last round-robin match in the Super Rugby competition against the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein.

The hard as nails eightman is expected to be sidelined for another four to five weeks.

Duvenage could also not be considered for the clash at Newlands.

The scrumhalf is still struggling with a leg injury that sidelined him for the last few weeks of Super Rugby.

Eightman Nick Koster will stand in as vice-captain.

The Western Province team have lost several of their stars to the Springboks and the upcoming Currie Cup is sure to be a baptism of fire for many of their young guns who will get their first taste of Currie Cup rugby.

Almost half of the Western Province team are made up of players who featured in the ABSA Under-21 competition last year - which the WP juniors won when they beat the Blue Bulls in the final in Durban.
