Fourie to lead young WP side

2011-07-14 15:24

Herman Mostert

Cape Town - Hooker Deon Fourie has been chosen to captain a youthful-looking Western Province side to take on Griquas at Newlands in their first ABSA Currie Cup match of the season.

Fourie will captain the side until newly appointed captain, Duane Vermeulen - and vice-captain, Dewaldt Duvenage, return from their injuries.

Vermeulen seriously injured his knee during the Stormers' last round-robin match in the Super Rugby competition against the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein.

The hard as nails eightman is expected to be sidelined for another four to five weeks.

Duvenage could also not be considered for the clash at Newlands.

The scrumhalf is still struggling with a leg injury that sidelined him for the last few weeks of Super Rugby.

Eightman Nick Koster will stand in as vice-captain.

The Western Province team have lost several of their stars to the Springboks and the upcoming Currie Cup is sure to be a baptism of fire for many of their young guns who will get their first taste of Currie Cup rugby.

Almost half of the Western Province team are made up of players who featured in the ABSA Under-21 competition last year - which the WP juniors won when they beat the Blue Bulls in the final in Durban.

Western Province:  15 Conrad Jantjes 14 Danie Poolman 13 Johann Sadie 12 Tim Whitehead 11 JJ Engelbrecht 10 Gary van Aswegen 9 Louis Schreuder 8 Nick Koster 7 Siya Kolisi 6 Wimpie van der Walt 5 De Kock Steenkamp 4 Hilton Lobberts 3 Brok Harris 2 Deon Fourie (Captain) 1 Wicus Blaauw

Substitutes: 16 Tiaan Liebenberg 17 Frans Malherbe 18 Adriaan Fondse 19 Rohan Kitshoff 20 Nick Groom 21 Demetri Catrikilis 22 Marcel Brache

    Go Griquas!! Whip those chokers.

      SAFFA-CAT - 2011-07-14 15:39

Apples with apples and pears with pears? Please remind me what titles the Bulls currently hold? Vodacom Cup? S15? Currie Cup? Amateur Cup? U19? U21? Now before the reality check I've just given you brings you to tears, I have a few words for you, courtesy of the 'All American Rejects" - "when all you got to keep is strong, move along move along like I know you do; and even when your hope is gone, move along move along just to make it through"..........

      Damian@bulls - 2011-07-14 15:47

@ saffa cat Sien jy kort hulp hoe weet jy die persoon is 'n bul? ek warry oor jou jong regtig gaan sien iemand.

      Pears - 2011-07-14 15:47

Bulls senior trophies the past 10 years: 9 WP/Stormers 0. Then there is quite a few junior trophies, Vodacom Cups etc which I dont reallly care about...but hey Saffa - you have the Conference Cup!! I quess that beats all! Kudo's bro! You should be really, really proud!! Awesome stuff from WP/Stormers!!! Screw s15 or Currie cup or even the WC - win the conference cup and you rock!

      The_Fox - 2011-07-14 15:48

Damian@bulls, "warry" jy eerder oor jouself.

      SAFFA-CAT - 2011-07-14 15:49

      Rampage15 - 2011-07-14 15:49

      Your Mother is a choker!!!!

      docraven - 2011-07-14 15:54

pears, is that all you can say about you Pansy Bulls. You guys had a totally Shyte season!!So get off your dildo and move on.

      Pears - 2011-07-14 16:04

@doccraven You are right, we had a sht season, I'll admit that every time. Stormers/WP had a sht DECADE. You never see WP/Stormers supporters admitting that though.

      SAFFA-CAT - 2011-07-14 16:07

@Pears (tears for fears) - waffle about the past as much as you like.......the reality for you chaps at the moment (currently/as it stands is: The "mighty" Bulls are TROPHY LESS just like we are...........

      Pears - 2011-07-14 16:17

@Saffa I'd rather have 3 super trophies compared to 0.

      donkerhond - 2011-07-14 16:19

@Pears. You only keep them for the season that you won them. So you have 0

      Friksepappa - 2011-07-14 16:46

Donkerhond, wrong! The Bulls will always have the last Super14 Trophy - that trophy belongs to the Bulls until the end of time. That was a keeper so to speak. Even if we suck, we have a trophy. Go Blue Bulls!!!

      docraven - 2011-07-14 17:00

Pears, and how many currie cup trophy's have WP won.You either very young, dumb or new to the game. Now take that long thick thing out your bum

      Tiger - 2011-07-14 17:01

@Rene Gaan was die skottelgoed.

      Krugga - 2011-07-14 17:17

docraven, if I count all the times you refer to men with "things" up their behinds then I'd like to put some money on you being an ex-convict, spent some time behind bars? Not to mention your mental state when it comes to children... You fit the role :-))))))

      Tiger - 2011-07-14 17:22

      Pears - 2011-07-14 18:17

@tiger n man wat graag slaai maak? Jy klink regtig soos n tipiese 'fyn' wp outjie...

      jk - 2011-07-15 08:31

saffa- told you yesterday your posts are way too long, we falling asleep reading it, we would stay awake if it was new info or at least interesting

      Damian@bulls - 2011-07-15 08:54

@ The Fox And saffa cat Weeerens word julle persoonlik julle high class stormers.

  • The_Fox - 2011-07-14 15:29

A large number of young players but a good team nevertheless. The Wimpie-selection is quite interesting though. Hope Brache gets some much needed game time. Good luck WP, it’s going to be tough! WP JOU LEKKER DING!

      The_Fox - 2011-07-14 15:32

Fourie is one of 10 changes to the Cape side that fronted the Crusaders two weeks previously. Conrad Jantjes, Louis Schreuder, Nick Koster, Brok Harris and Wicus Blaauw are the only players retained in the starting line up.

  • BokBru - 2011-07-14 15:30

Hou die manne dop. Toekomstige Springbokke hier. Goeie span.

  • Pears - 2011-07-14 15:32

Hilton Lobberts??! Really?! The guy they bought from the Bulls 5 years ago finally gets a start...I remember Rassie telling the world WP will mould him into the next Danie Rossouw lock/flank. What happened?

      BokBru - 2011-07-14 15:35

      Hy was beseer.

      Hanjo - 2011-07-14 15:38

he never did stipulate when, now did he this space!

      Pears - 2011-07-14 15:40

@bokbru - For 5 years?? Come know he played for Boland regularly the past 5 years, WP never used him. Just another talented player bought and wasted.

      GHT - 2011-07-14 15:54

He was a super thug... Don't know if he has dropped that tag

      Hanjo - 2011-07-14 16:04

if you want to get technical pears, this isn't his first start either...

      Tiger - 2011-07-14 17:03

  • GHT - 2011-07-14 15:45

I know they are the best in the position and they will help win us the Cup, but I really dislike Sadie and Engelbrecht at the moment...

      The_Fox - 2011-07-14 15:47

      Yip. I agree.

      Cereal-Killa77 - 2011-07-14 15:55

Never fear, Sadie has just gone to bulls for game time. In 2 years time when J. Fourie leaves WP, Sadie will come back!!

      SAFFA-CAT - 2011-07-14 15:57

@GHT and Foxie - I reckon their new Bulls team mates (come end October) won't be liking them that much either, when they hear how much young Sadie especially is being paid.....(not sure if some of the Bulls older players will be 'happy' with the equality thereof) I really hope they both have a great Currie Cup with us - but honestly - the WPRFU did the right thing by NOT offering Sadie more cash to stay. I know many don't see it at the moment - but the refusal by the WPRFU to increase his salary (to meet the Bulls offer) is what made players like Kitshoff, Etsebeth, Carr, Elstadt and co decide to STAY here. How could WP warrant paying Sadie 3 times as much as the other youngsters (all of who are JUST as talented in their various positions as what Sadie is) The funny thing about the whole 'transfer' - is that the Bulls have always said they don't pay 'massive salaries' to youngsters.......especially when the youngster is 'untested' in terms of a few seasons gametime - yet in this case they have broken all of their own 'rules'......In fact, the Bulls have pulled a WP on themselves here :)

      jk - 2011-07-14 16:04

saffa- your posts are way too long, are you by any chance a boring school teacher??, cause bloody hell!, we tired of your essays boet!!!, if you were just talking sence it would be a different story!!!

      GHT - 2011-07-14 16:04

@ Saffa. I never said WP should offer them more. In fact, I think it is a good thing that the union stood their ground. But for them leaving. Sigh. They would have had such a beautiful future here. Bloody traitors.

      GHT - 2011-07-14 16:06

Although, I would have probably done the same if it was me. Guaranteed game time and pockets full of cash...

      The_Fox - 2011-07-14 16:09

Very true Saffa, but it's still a very bitter pill to swallow..

      SAFFA-CAT - 2011-07-14 16:17

@jk - could it be that you suffer with A.D.D? And the real issue is that you struggle to focus for longer than 30 seconds? I am not a 'boet' either dude. I am a boetette or whatever name you would use for the female version of 'boet'. My posts bother you - don't read them - simple.

      Kleinboet - 2011-07-14 16:17

JK, Saffa-cat knows more about rugby than most of you guys posting comments on these pages. And she is a girl, my friend. I think she is trying to teach you some rugby since you know so little. Think of it: You will be able to follow the game because all of a sudden you begin to understand it!

      SAFFA-CAT - 2011-07-14 16:18

@GHT - chasing the cheddar are the youngsters. I would have done the same though......It's kind of good for SA rugby though - however hard it is to admit that.

      The_Fox - 2011-07-14 16:19

SAFFA, rather ADHD....I think that's the High Definition form of ADD ;-)

      Damian@bulls - 2011-07-15 09:05

@ Saffa cat EN jy weet presies hoeveel sadie geoffer is hoeveel?

  • gooinat - 2011-07-14 15:53

Whats the story with Habana,is he ducking or staying at Newlands?????????

      The_Fox - 2011-07-14 16:07

Hey goonat - I heard he is leaving but have no idea where he is going.

      SAFFA-CAT - 2011-07-14 16:20

@Gooinat - if he stays, he is taking a salary cut - that's for frikkin sure.

  • Hein - 2011-07-14 15:55

At last the bergbokkejane managed to scrap a team together. Go Griquas!!!!!!!

      Christiaan - 2011-07-14 16:20

Jy is seker n Bul Onderstersteuner!!!!!.....So ek se vior jou.......GO SHARKS!!!!!

      Kleinboet - 2011-07-14 16:21

'Bergbokkejane' is beter as plein veldbobbejane soos jy!

      SAFFA-CAT - 2011-07-14 16:42

Hello Paul. I hope all is rocking in the land of milk, honey, snow and ice hockey.

      Kleinboet - 2011-07-14 22:45

Christiaan, ek is 'n Stormersman.

  • RobinHood - 2011-07-14 16:00

At last Catrikilis gets the this space

      The_Fox - 2011-07-14 16:08

Ja, I rate that kid highly..

  • jk - 2011-07-14 16:02

no problem with this side!!!!!! go go gooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Lefty - 2011-07-14 16:12

      The_Fox - 2011-07-14 17:18

Picking Hilton doesn't bother me much as he will most probably be replaced with Fondse going forward. But hey, you never know, maybe he'll find his mojo again.

  • Frisbee - 2011-07-14 16:18

    Peter Grant???

      The_Fox - 2011-07-14 16:20

      In Japan. Again.

      SAFFA-CAT - 2011-07-14 16:28

@Foxie - I would be pretty relieved if he stayed there. We don't need him, we have a cupboard full of uber-talented 10's who need game time. Bringing him back for next years S15 would be a step back in lieu of forward imho.

      Frisbee - 2011-07-14 17:12

      @The_Fox: Oh ya, whoops...

      The_Fox - 2011-07-14 17:16

I agree Saffa, his time is up. His loyalty is obviously no longer with WPRU.

      RobinHood - 2011-07-14 17:20

      Foxie - would yours be?

      Kleinboet - 2011-07-14 22:52

  • Kleinboet - 2011-07-14 16:28

This is a very young but also very talented team. I would have liked it better if we did not have to rely on Sadie and Engelbrecht anymore. They get playtime to make them better players for the Bulls; whereas our loyal youngsters have to sit back and do not develop as a result. There are so many ex-Maties players playing for Griquas that I might just get mixed up and accidentally shout for the wrong team!

      SAFFA-CAT - 2011-07-14 16:36

@Kleinboet - the Griquas are my 'dark horse' side for the Currie Cup.....They were a pretty good team in the Vodacom Cup, and it took a last second penalty from Gary van Aswegen to win us that game at Newlands....(and they did not have their S15 players at that stage either....) I think Griquas are going to be a tough team to flatten....Sharks also look pretty strong - ditto for the Lions and Cheetahs.....I think we are in for some incredible rugby this Currie Cup, and many youngsters will make the step-up. Can't wait!

      Fasie - 2011-07-14 21:50

@SAFFA So every team according to you is looking good but the Bulls??

      Kleinboet - 2011-07-14 22:32

Moenie so kleinserig wees nie, man!

      Mike@CapeT - 2011-07-15 04:19

  • Jan - 2011-07-14 17:57

@Pears, at least the Stormers did not have the proud record of loosing all the super games in one season, unlike a BB and Lions team. That must still be a bad feeling that the Lions DARE to copy that record?

  • Carl Muller - 2011-07-14 18:24

Bulls forever....

  • Kleinboet - 2011-07-14 22:33

Weet iemand waar is Peter Grant? As hy (weer) beseer is, het ek dit gemis.

      Kleinboet - 2011-07-14 22:54

Goed, ek sien hy is terug Japan toe.

  • jk - 2011-07-15 08:23

if any of the sour bulls got a problem with this then they know really nothing. go deon go!!! does that mean liebenberg is a permanent second choise in wp??

  • Damian@bulls - 2011-07-15 08:56

  • Damian@bulls - 2011-07-15 08:59

(Herhaal ad infinitum as jy 'n Bulls ondersteuner is. As jy vir die WP skreeu, sing dit net as jy vandeesweek 'n papsak kon bekostig.)
