Cape Town – Western Province coach Allister Coetzee has pledged his support to Springbok coach Peter de Villiers amidst divergent views about how contracted Springboks should be utilised for provincial duty.

“Peter will have my support in whatever he wants to do in national interest now. If that means that certain players have to rest now, we will be behind him all the way,” said Coetzee.

A contracted Bok like Ricky Januarie may, according to some, have benefited more from playing than a conditioning programme. However, it’s doubtful whether WP would have picked Januarie ahead of vice-captain Dewaldt Duvenage.

“Conditioning at the right time is never a bad idea. You have to be fit first and foremost to be able to play well,” Coetzee said of some of the Boks that had not played in a while.

“Unhappiness about how some of these players are being managed is office talk. I want to focus on the Currie Cup. I’m just delighted that we have Jean de Villiers, Juan de Jongh and Gio Aplon back,” said Coetzee.

Province will on Wednesday name the team that will play the Leopards at Newlands on Saturday.

It is believed that the Bok-trio will join flyhalf Lionel Cronjé in the starting line-up.

“This is an ideal opportunity to build on our flyhalf depth,” said Coetzee.
