Bloemfontein – Don’t be surprised if Free State trump the Blue Bulls in Saturday’s Currie Cup match by dishing them a little of their own medicine of an aerial bombardment.
A strange test awaits the Free Staters at Loftus Versfeld when they take on the Blue Bulls, who are without a number of kicking stalwarts. In fact, the visitors are probably better equipped to play a kicking game.
Without the likes of Fourie du Preez, Morné Steyn and Zane Kirchner, the Blue Bulls probably don’t pose such a tactical kicking danger.
That is precisely why the visitors’ Tewis de Bruyn, Louis Strydom and Hennie Daniller probably won’t hesitate to use the boot.
Free State also utilised a successful tactical kicking game in their 33-26 win over Griquas and therefore only minor adjustments are needed.
Furthermore, the Bulls were beaten at the back by the Sharks and the Free Staters would have taken note.
It appears as if the home team prefers to keep the ball in hand with Jacques-Louis Potgieter at flyhalf.
Daniller, who is a top backline performer for Free State in the Currie Cup, says it’s a different Bulls team to the one he has become accustomed to.
“The Bulls have a relatively young team and backline. They are without the likes of Fourie du Preez and there are a few places in which we’d like to take them on,” he said.
“We have noticed that they don’t kick as much anymore. If someone kicks, it’s usually Jacques-Louis. They also don’t advance so quickly on defence and we have a few plans with that.”
Daniller believes the Bulls will have a long day if pressure is put on Potgieter.
Fullback Jaco van der Westhuyzen is also inclined to kick less than Kirchner.
“Jaco is an attacking fullback and not someone that just kicks the ball back,” said Daniller.
Daniller has carried his good play from the Super 14 into the Currie Cup and is satisfied with his form.
He regularly brings his side relief with his big left boot. Daniller also believes Free State’s kicking is improving.
“Louis has kicked well tactically for the last two games. I am practising my kicks and am satisfied with my kicking. It definitely helps when I strike the ball well.”
