Bookies back Sharks for title

Cape Town - The Sharks will successfully defend their Absa Currie Cup title this season, if local bookmakers are to be believed.

The Durbanites, who won the title when they thumped Western Province 33-19 in the final at Newlands last year, have been installed as 9/5 favourites by Sportsbet.co.za.

Western Province have been listed as second favourites with a 14/5 shot, followed by the Blue Bulls at 7/2.

The Lions and Cheetahs are deemed to have an equal shot at the title at 6/1, with Griquas, EP Kings and Pumas seen as rank outsiders at 25/1, 50/1 and 66/1, respectively.

The Currie Cup kicks off this weekend with the EP Kings hosting Western Province in the first game on Friday (19:10 kick-off).

In Saturday's games, Griquas tackle the Sharks in Kimberley (15:00), the Golden Lions duel with the Blue Bulls in Johannesburg (17:05) and the Pumas host the Free State Cheetahs in Nelspruit (19:10).

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
