Danwel Demas scored four tries as the Regent Boland Cavaliers ended the EP Kings’ unbeaten run by securing a 49-15 (half-time 13-10) win in their Absa Currie Cup First Division match at Boland Park in Wellington on Friday.
Right-wing Demas’s efforts were undoubtedly the highlight of the match but the Kings, who had won nine matches out of nine heading into the clash with Boland, were their own worst enemies and they accumulated three yellow-cards during the game as they incurred the wrath of referee Marius Jonker.
The bonus-point win means that Boland cut the gap between themselves and the log-leading Kings on the points table to just one point with EP having completed their league fixtures.
Boland play the SWD Eagles in their final game to give them a chance of topping the log before the knockout stages begin.
The match was a relatively tight affair up until the 67th minute with Boland leading 21-15 but a yellow card to Kings flank Jacque Engelbrecht for a late tackle allowed Boland to take control and they scored 28 unanswered points in the remaining 13 minutes of the game.
The home team were the first to trouble the scorers when flyhalf Elgar Watts drilled over a long-range penalty in the 10th minute despite playing against a stiff breeze in the first half.
The score spurred the Kings on and three minutes later they moved in to the lead when burly loosehead prop Jaco Engels stretched over to score a try under a pile of bodies.
Flyhalf Louis Strydom added the conversion before he succeeded with a penalty as the visitors took a handy 10-3 lead after 20 minutes.
But Boland clawed their way back into the contest as Watts kicked his second penalty before the Kings’ task became a touch more difficult when tighthead prop Clint Newland earned himself a yellow card, in the 36th minute, for striking an opponent.
The hosts were quick to take advantage of their numerical advantage and shortly before the break they regained the lead when Demas chased through a grubber kick from fullback Willie le Roux.
The pacey Demas did exceptionally well to gather the rolling ball before diving to score in the right-hand corner.
Watts succeed with the difficult touchline conversion as the Cavaliers went to the break holding a 13-10 lead.
Both teams lost players to yellow cards in the opening exchanges of the second half with Kings flank Devin Oosthuizen and Boland hooker Clemen Lewis both being sin-binned for killing the ball at the breakdown.
The Kings scored first in the second half when eighthman Luke Watson barged his way over for a try in the 49th minute but it was to be the last time the visitors would add to their points tally.
Demas grabbed his second try, in the 64th minute, when he chased through a speculative kick before controlling the ball with his feet on his way to his five-pointer.
Five minutes later Boland scrumhalf Bolla Conradie dived over from close range after a powerful surge from Demas before the wing grabbed his hat-trick try in the 73rd minute when he showed good pace to outstrip the cover defence to run in from 40 metres out.
Boland, who had lost 23-18 to the Kings earlier in the season, were rampant and they grabbed two tries in the last four minutes through Le Roux and Demas who completed a fine individual performance with another long-range try.
