Boland breeze past Griffons

Welkom - The Regent Boland Cavaliers breezed to a handsome 46-7 victory over the Tasol Solar Griffons in their Absa Currie Cup First Division match at the North-West Stadium on Friday.

The Cavaliers were quickly on to the scoreboard, grabbing their first try after just two minutes, and they had rushed to a 20-0 lead by half time. But the visitors will be mindful of the numerous scoring chances they wasted due to poor passing and handling.

Fullback Willie le Roux, who had a fine game and was an attacking threat throughout, claimed Boland's first try. He received the ball, after a turnover, on his own 10-metre line and went the aerial route over the defence, gathering the chip-ahead himself to score.

Flyhalf Elgar Watts converted and added penalties in the 28th and 33rd minutes to give the Cavaliers a 13-0 lead.

The Boland forwards were dominating the collisions, their physical presence and ability to ruck through the breakdowns seriously disrupting the Griffons.

The Cavaliers made the Griffons defence look stupid for their second try, eighthman Zandre Jordaan's pressure on scrumhalf Enrico Schultz causing the ball to pop up to opposite number Bolla Conradie, the 33-year-old veteran racing clear to score from 50 metres out.

Watts converted to give the Cavaliers a healthy 20-point half-time lead and Boland went straight on to the attack from the second-half kick-off. After several phases and concerted pressure, flank Alwyn Bester skittled over the last two defenders to score.

With the excellent Le Roux again pulling the strings, an outstanding backline move saw replacement wing Brendon April find space on the outside in the 64th minute to score the bonus-point try.

April's second try, seven minutes later, was a similarly exciting affair. The Cavaliers scrum provided wonderful ball, with Braam Gerber bursting clear deep inside his own half. Le Roux was quickly up in support and his nifty scissors with April saw the former Griffons player race clear to score.

The Cavaliers were 39-0 up, but the Northern Free Staters would not be whitewashed as captain and outside centre Werner Griesel, who had a fine game defensively, was quickly on to a wild pass on the Boland 22, hacking it ahead and then re-gathering to score.

The final say, however, would be Boland's as wing Cornal Hendricks powered over in the corner, Le Roux adding a brilliant touchline conversion.
