Giving as good as they got and with 25 minutes remaining, the Bulldogs carried the game to their opponents, with props Armon Fourie and Byron Schmidt, eighthman Lubabalo Mzwakali and lock Tonga prominent among the pack.
But the visitors found breathing space when April collected a loose ball at a ruck to speed in from 45 metres for Watts to convert (29-15).
The Bulldogs, enjoying a lot of possession, suffered a blow when replacement scrumhalf Sinovuyo Nyoka was yellow-carded with 14 minutes remaining for holding a player back while replacement Boland lock Cornal Hendricks suffered the same fate five minutes later.
