Bok call-ups to affect Lions?

2012-09-23 22:04

Johannesburg - While the Golden Lions can celebrate their supremacy at the top of the Currie Cup log, they have been dealt a big blow with the news that three of their key players will be unavailable for the next two weeks because of Springbok duty.

The Lions have now opened a three-point gap in the competition after their come-from-behind 28-22 victory over the Sharks in Johannesburg on Saturday.

Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer was, however, the bearer of bad news for the Lions as he named in-form flyhalf Elton Jantjies, talented utility back Jaco Taute and prop CJ van der Linde in his squad for the national side’s final two matches in the Rugby Championship.

This news means they now have to travel to Newlands to take on Western Province this week without Jantjies, Taute and Van der Linde, which could make their trip considerably harder. The trio will also miss their game against Griquas in Kimberley the following week.

The loss of Jantjies, especially, is a big blow as he has been a standout player in this year's Currie Cup.

However, they are in a favourable position at the top of the log and will take confidence from their comeback win over the Sharks.

Lions coach Johan Ackermann praised his charges for their show of character to come up victorious after they trailed by 16-6 at the half-time break.

“The character was tested and the guys showed character, so I am very proud of them and grateful,” Ackermann said.

“The good thing about the win is always it keeps the excitement in the camp up and that is the positives.”

He, however, felt the team still had a lot to improve on if they wanted to defend their title successfully.

“There are a lot of things that we can correct but it is better to win than to fall behind and start chasing on the log,” he said.

“There is still a lot of work to do and we are still a way off from where we want to be but hopefully in the next few weeks we will become even better.”

The top-of-the-log clash saw the Sharks move into the second place on the log, three points behind the Lions and a point ahead of Western Province.

Sharks mentor John Plumtree lamented the fact his side let the match slip out of their grasp and their inability to execute properly.

“We just didn’t build enough pressure, the times we had the ball and put pressure on them we looked - after four, five phases - like we could break them,” Plumtree said.

“That was our main focus this week we tried to just keep it simple but the guys couldn’t execute so it is disappointing.

“We aren’t going to win the Currie Cup unless we can do our share of attacking and building pressure.”

The Sharks will host the Blue Bulls in Durban next week while the Golden Lions will next face the third-placed Western Province in Cape Town.

I dont think Heyneke's prioritys is where its suppost to be weakening the lions and in turn sending back sharks and bulls . The boks have no chance left and now the bull in him wants to ruin it for the lions what a dh

Agree 100% Taute might make the bench only and Jantjies (although No. 1 flyhalf in the country) will probably take a back seat to Goosen and everybodies favourite nobody Morne Steyn. I am disgusted with rugby politics and the way my team (Lions) have been treated this year. Still they keep their heads high with splendid winning open rugby. So proud of them.

Bok call-ups to affect Lions? Nope, Lions call-ups to affect Boks.

      angelo.b.landers - 2012-09-24 10:32

Charles you don't make sense really? How can you tell me Elton will be worst than Morne Steyn! Ect HM always have his strategies going! He is sending Bulls and Sharks players back to the Currie Cup to Boost their clubs and he is now taking The Lions best players to downgrade the Lions! Even if he selected 3 Lions players HM will not use them for the 2 weeks, He will Start Goosen and Morne om the bench! What is Elton doing there if he is not going to use him. HM must choose the guys on merit and not on color! Goosen is not match fit but he still wants the guy there! If Goosen must have a bad day HM will blame Goosen for his lack of experience HM never takes up responsibility!

      sean.bagley.50 - 2012-09-24 11:03

The Lions have got 3 of their own players in the 30 man squad.Who would have thought that would be the case at the start of the year hey?

      george.beukes.9 - 2012-09-24 11:17

Andre nou verstaan ek nie,die hele tyd kla julle oor JANTJIES,TAUTE en CJ wat nie in die BOKSPAN is nie...noudat hulle die kans kry,kla julle ook.

      sean.bagley.50 - 2012-09-24 11:45

HM should stop messing with the CC teams by picking players that you'll know he'll never use. He is ****ing with South Africa's talent at the moment. You can't select everybody which is true, but selecting players like Pat Lambie and Elton Jantjies if they are never to be part of your plans,is just inexcusable. Lambie was the next in line for the no 10 Bok jersey, then he got shifted to 15,now he's not even that anymore. You had Kanko at no 8 playing his best rugby in a long while, and yet Pierre Spies was your obvious choice. Now all of a sudden its Duanne Vermeulen. Elton Jantjies was selected before to warm the bench for M Steyn, but then you switched to Goosen as your golden boy.Lambie has 3 years plus international experience and yet HM keeps him on the bench.WTF was up with that? Your selection policy is utterly disgraceful for South Africa's rugby talent HM.And then people wonder why we are loosing our top talented players to overseas clubs and to money.Morne Steyn got so many chances that no other player in the country gets.If he had been treated exactly the same way as the likes of Lambie, Kanko or Jantjies, whilst on the top of his game,he would have been long gone by now to an overseas club.

      blou.johnny - 2012-09-23 23:59

....with his cry-baby, tantrum throwing daddy... ....Heyneke..? ...why are you so rude with Elton...?? ...we all know he is best fly-half in the country...(according to his daddy) .......He he he he he he he he ...!!

      TravieGrif - 2012-09-24 09:28

I must say I was not impressed with his behavior on the field on Saturday. He gives the impression of having a rather over-inflated view of himself and his abilities. He is good, but he's not that good. Great when going forward...poor under pressure.

If you find yourself looking for and detecting the perceived arrogance in others, you might need to focus your energy on other things. Please leave Elton Jantjies alone. Arrogance is one of those things which are VERY subjective. Since you do not know the man personally, I doubt you can judge whether is is arrogant or not. Judge Gently!

  • vicky.vangemert - 2012-09-23 23:42

So that is the REAL reason for calling them up? Old Heyneke trying to give the Bulls a leg up in the Currie cup?

  • leigh.mapu - 2012-09-24 01:34

Finally a decent Bok 1st-five. Now HM just has ti have the balls to drop Morne.

  • eddie.norton1 - 2012-09-24 05:06

Atlast HM has seen the light!!!! Elton is the one player that can spark that back line!! CJ van der linde is not my best choice but better than that brain dead Greyling?

  • ann.donnelly.22 - 2012-09-24 06:15

Very glad the three Lions players are finally getting a chance; I cannot help but wonder, though, why these talented players are good enough to play for their country, but not good enough to play (together with their team) in the Super 16? I keep hearing what a wonderboy Luke Watson is... why hasn't he been called up?? Just askin'. Keep politics out of rugby.

  • Michael Kleber - 2012-09-24 06:30

if they all just sit on the bench it will be a waste

      sean.brady.14224 - 2012-09-25 07:38

Elton won't make the match 22 so he won't even be on the bench!

  • a.j.bosch - 2012-09-24 06:53

So Meyer now has 3 flyhalves, if you don't consider Lambie as a flyhalf (ala HM) and 3 Fullbacks in his squad. It will be interesting to see which union(s) get screwed over this weekend, by not having their players released back to them and those players not being used by the Boks either.

      blou.johnny - 2012-09-24 10:31

...Pat Lambie is a full-back... ...and a midget...

      Amanda - 2012-09-24 14:33

blou is a stuck record. Does anybody ever take this oke or the others seriously here? I Just shake my head when I read the comments here. Some people just have no life.

  • nico.pretorius.946 - 2012-09-24 07:25

Won't affect the Lions, they will still win this weekend and keep the dream alive, GO LIONS, keep the cup in JHB!!!

  • jean.rossouwsa - 2012-09-24 07:31

SARFU.. DIE LIONS DOEN TE GOEN NA JULLE SMAAK NE? SO... WAT MAAK ONS?...... ONS VAT HULLE BESTE SPELERS EN DAN SPEEL ONS HULLE NIE EERS NIE.....NE!!!

  • andre.terblanche.5 - 2012-09-24 07:40

HM word nou gedwing om die kwotastelsel te gebruik. Lions maak toe so geen skade nie. Hoop net HM gebruik hom nie.

  • sarelbr - 2012-09-24 08:05

  • nkwe.mahlanghu - 2012-09-24 09:31

      Amanda - 2012-09-24 14:35

Like the tantrum you give every single day? LOL @ you guys with small brains, Willing to bet you all have smallcox sindrome as well.

  • george.beukes.9 - 2012-09-24 11:14

  • steven.crofton - 2012-09-24 11:56

I think Elton really deserves a chance, but I'd bring him on in the 2nd half to start with, for the last 20 minutes or so, to see how he does. Biggest worry is that he's not big enough. I could see him doing well against Australia and the Pumas, but I think the AB's would run over him. Which they won't with Goosen. But I think he's better than Lambie at 10 and can be used 'horses for courses'. Lambie's better at 15, I'd start him there and have Taute on the bench, also covering centre coz JdV seems past his best. Kirchener's not bad but nothing special, and is a decent back up behind those two. JC Janse van Rensburg ahead of CJ, please HM!! Or why not give Kitshoff a go? We can't win the Rugby Championship this year, so rather look to the future man!! Speaking of which, I hope Coenie gets a shot at the AB's. They'll try get under his skin, and if he doesn't lose it, he's our next Os.

  • hespach - 2012-09-24 12:44

.... and the village idiots are in full flight again!!!!!!!!

  • randy.solomons1 - 2012-09-24 14:27

as a WP supporter i really dont get HM. really? i think he just picks form players to hold bags at training and hope to form rubs off on the players who aren't performing? i would love a win against the Lions this weekend but I would prefer it come against the strongest possible side.

  • steven.crofton - 2012-09-24 17:18

Village idiots? Let me guess: you want HM to give Morne Steyn ANOTHER 10 undeserved caps to cost us more games; to keep Kirchener too becuase he's also perfect for that outdated, loser kick-and-chase game, and so is CJ; you think 30-something JdV is still in his prime; J Potgieter's been brilliant in his 3 yests; Pierre Spies is the best in the world even when our forwards aren't dominating; you hate Taute because he's not from your province, same thing for Kitshoff, and Jantjies because he's not white. Yup, village idiot alright.

  • abe.sheldon - 2012-09-24 22:35

Do these guys have a choice to go, or because they were never selected in the first place, but now that HM is seeing is g@t he wants these guys, so can they say NO? In soccer acros the world players say o to their national teams.
