Blue Bulls to name captain

J.J. Harmse

Pretoria – Gary Botha, Derick Kuün, Juandré Kruger or Dewald Potgieter?

One of those four players will on Monday be appointed Blue Bulls captain for the forthcoming Currie Cup and will lead the side as early as Saturday for their opening game against the Natal Sharks in Durban.

New Blue Bulls coach Pine Pienaar was non-committal when asked about the captaincy shortly after his appointment, but has subsequently had sufficient time to make a decision after consulting with Bulls coach Frans Ludeke and union rugby chief Heyneke Meyer.

The fact that any of the four can lead is a pointer to their being depth in leadership. It will be interesting to see how Pienaar makes his choice.

It is expected that the player he decides on will also lead the Bulls in next year’s Super Rugby tournament, though Chiliboy Ralepelle and Pierre Spies may also be candidates.

Kuün wants to go and farm at the end of the year, while Botha may retire. Kruger and Potgieter (who has previously captained the Springboks) will therefore be the best options with the future in mind.

However, Botha and Kuün successfully led the team in previous seasons.
