Big Brother at Loftus

Neels Jackson

Pretoria – The new crowd control measures at Loftus Versfeld claimed its first victim on Saturday during the Blue Bulls vs Western Province match.

Stadium manager Hugo Kemp said that the system, which allows spectators to SMS a number to complain about the behaviour of anyone, had worked well.

The problem areas can be monitored with a camera system. They received 12 complaints. Four of those were jokers who had something to say about referee Craig Joubert.

Kemp said the manner in which they handled complaints was to approach the problematic spectators and speak to them first. In 90% of cases that was enough to solve the problem.

On Saturday there was one drinker with whom the issue could not be resolved and he was evicted from the stadium.

Kemp said the system was still in its infancy and would still be fine-tuned.

They are still thinking about how often the number where SMS-messages are directed should be flashed on the screen.

Kemp said they had received good feedback from spectators.
