Die Burger newspaper reports that according to a French website Pietersen has been released by Bayonne earlier this week.
The 27-year-old was unsure and somewhat pessimistic about the future when queried by Die Burger.
Western Province denied reports that they already had discussions with Pietersen in June this year.
Pietersen's versatility could be vital to the Cape side's cause next year. He is equally comfortable at wing and fullback and has also helped out at flyhalf - a position the Stormers and WP had big injury concerns with in 2011.
