Durban - Sharks coach John Plumtree and flanker Keegan Daniel on Tuesday received the Absa Coach and Player of the Month awards for October at a ceremony held in Durban.
Plumtree’s side, who will take on Western Province in the final of the Absa Currie Cup on Saturday, ended the league phase of the 2010 competition in first position on the log. They booked their place in this weekend’s final after they secured a 16-12 victory over the defending champions, the Blue Bulls, in Durban earlier this month.
The hosts have not lost at home this season. They recorded league victories at The Absa Stadium Durban over the Platinum Leopards (63-6), Free State Cheetahs (30-16), GWK Griquas (48-30), Western Province (27-16), Lions (48-19), Blue Bulls (34-28) and the Pumas (27-17).
“It’s a massive week that lies ahead for us at The Sharks and to receive this special award means that we are hopefully doing something right. Once again, thanks to Absa for this award,” added Plumtree.
The Absa Currie Cup Coach and Player of the Month competition rewards players who have consistently performed during each month of South Africa’s domestic competition. Coaches are also honoured on a monthly basis for their contribution to their team’s consistent performances.
Daniel has been in outstanding form for The Sharks this season. The 25-year-old flanker is the third leading try-scorer in the 2010 competition and has been one of the Durban side’s star performers during their campaign this year. He is one of five nominees in the category of the Absa Currie Cup Player of the Year Award which will be announced at the annual SARU Player of the Year banquet on Monday.
“Firstly I am exceptionally humbled to receive this award,” said Daniel.
“It’s not something that you work towards, but to be recognised by the Absa Currie Cup Premier Division coaches is really something special, and I am grateful that I received this award for the month of October.”
Meanwhile GWK Griquas winger Bjorn Basson was also honoured at the awards ceremony held in Durban on Tuesday.
Basson scored 21 tries this season and broke the Absa Currie Cup try-scoring record of 19 that was previously held by Carel du Plessis (1986) and Colin Lloyd (2006).
“It’s a feeling you can’t really explain and it is something that takes quite a while to sink in, but I feel really privileged to be the holder of such a record,” said Basson.
