Aplon braces for kicking duel

Cape Town - Western Province fullback Gio Aplon believes Golden Lions flyhalf Elton Jantjies will play a vital role with his tactical kicking in their Currie Cup clash at Ellis Park on Friday.

Lions coach Johann Ackermann on Tuesday included Jantjies as his starting flyhalf after he played from the bench in their 62-23 win over the Blue Bulls last week.

Marnitz Boshoff shifts to fullback following the withdrawal of Chrysander Botha due to a hamstring injury.

Aplon believes Jantjies's role will be vital in the outcome of the game, and he has braced himself for a kicking barrage.

"Elton is a quality player and in Marnitz Boshoff they have a fullback who can also kick well. The same goes for Guy Cronjé (scrumhalf)," he told Die Burger's website.

Aplon said Jantjies has a good rugby brain but emphasised he is ready for the duel.

"We have to be prepared for their kicking tactics. Statistics show that the team which kicks more and carries the ball less, ends up winning more games. But we're striving for a more balanced game plan."

Friday's clash kick off at 19:10.
