Paris - Racing Metro and France forward Sebastien Chabal has been suspended by the French league for 60 days for criticising referees in the French Top 14.

The French league, LNR, says in a statement on Thursday that Chabal is suspended for "harming the greater interest of rugby," but that his suspension will be halved if he agrees to participate in activities, such as refereeing junior league games.

Chabal said in an interview with Le Journal du Dimanche newspaper last month, ahead of the release of his autobiography, that "Top 14 referees are rubbish," with "only two or three who are pros."

Since then, he has been suspended by Racing Metro.

Chabal, who has 62 caps for France either as a No. 8 or a lock, was not picked in the preliminary World Cup squad on Wednesday.
