Catt to plot against Boks

Cape Town – It looks increasingly likely that Port Elizabeth-born Mike Catt will be involved in the England coaching team plotting the Springboks’ downfall in the three-Test series on our shores in June.

The Rugby World Cup 2003-winning utility back, who represented England 75 times over a 13-year period after launching his first-class career as a youngster with Eastern Province, will reportedly be nailed down as interim backline coach in the next few days.

According to The Guardian and other London newspapers, an announcement that Catt will team up with head coach Stuart Lancaster is possible later this week.

And another man well familiar with strategic planning against the Boks, former France defence coach Dave Ellis, is also tipped to be among the travelling party.

England play three Tests – the final one in Catt’s birthplace, on June 23 – and two midweek matches on their visit.

Yorkshireman Ellis, who aided France in their drive to the World Cup final last year, was quoted as saying: “During my 12 years with France I had a pretty good record against South Africa.

“England need to continue the momentum they gained in the Six Nations. If you go out to South Africa and you’re not prepared, particularly if you’re wearing an England jersey, there’s no margin for errors.

“Would I be willing to help? Yes, without a doubt, whether it’s short-term or long-term.”

England will name a 40-strong squad for the SA safari on May 10.
