Team profile: Border Bullets

Cape Town - The brainchild of like-minded brothers, Russell and Grant Cotterell, the Border Bullets were created in 2009 for the inaugural Cape Town Tens tournament. Having played Sevens and Tens rugby in countries such as Bangkok, Hong Kong and Dubai, they could not wait to get involved in South Africa’s very own weekend of rugby awesomeness.

As the name suggests, the team hails from the small coastal province of Border where the majority of the members learnt their skills at fine rugby institutions such as Selborne, Dale, Buffs and St Marks clinic for alcohol abusers. The team have been playing with or against each other for the last 23 years  and have now joined forces to make the formidable Border Bullets team.

Most of the guys are still playing club rugby, while the rest dust off their boots once a year to try and prove to themselves that they still have what it takes to compete in the hectically competitive beer league. Although many of the players are long past their best, we still manage to put some decent rugby together and at times you do get glimpses of the speed, skill and finesse of years gone by.

The team has a relatively successful record in Cape Town, winning the plate in 2009, and losing in the semi-finals in 2010 and 2011. Off the field, the guys have also shown great form in the beer tent and have had great success in consuming vast amounts of the sponsors label, which seems to act as a “medicine” to all the aches and pains.

The tournament seems to get better and better every year and once again we are greatly looking forward to the 2012 edition and are counting down the days until February 3.

See you there!
