De Jongh replaces Butch

2010-06-03 14:47

Cardiff - Uncapped Juan de Jongh has been named in the Springbok team to face Wales in Cardiff on Saturday, replacing Butch James who has been withdrawn because of contractual issues.

The 21-year-old was named in the No 12 jersey when Springbok coach Peter de Villiers confirmed the team at a press conference in Cardiff on Thursday.

“This is almost unbelievable, but it’s an exciting moment for me too,” said De Jongh.

“I feel for Butch, but I must now focus on what the team needs from me on Saturday. It's good to be playing with experienced players like Ruan (Pienaar) and Jaque (Fourie) and my experience playing with Jaque in the Super 14 will also be a great help.”

De Villiers said he was disappointed at the late change but that it provided a great opportunity for the young centre to prove himself.

“This is a great opportunity for Juan, who has had a fantastic Super 14 season. He is a talented player who has held his own in a very tough environment and I have faith in his abilities to make the step up.”

De Jongh is one of three uncapped players from the Super 14 finalist Stormers in an otherwise experienced line-up. The other newcomers are wing Gio Aplon and flank Francois Louw.

Victor Matfield replaces Andries Bekker in the one other change to the starting line-up named on May 22. Zane Kirchner comes on to the bench in place of De Jongh.

James was withdrawn as the Test falls outside the IRB’s designated June “Global Release” window – during which time clubs must release players to their national teams.

SARU hoped to secure the player’s release on Wednesday by virtue of clauses in his contract that allow player release for teams such as the British & Irish Lions and Barbarians.

SARU hoped that as no player welfare issue was at stake, James could be similarly released. However Premier Rugby rules prevent the release of players to national unions, except for the final three Saturdays in June.

“SARU, Bath and Butch were all keen to see Butch play but the rule has been strictly enforced,” said Oregan Hoskins, president of the South African Rugby Union (SARU).

“What’s particularly frustrating is that Schalk Brits has just played 33 matches for Saracens and can be released to play for the Barbarians against Ireland this weekend, whereas Butch has played barely a dozen matches this season and he can’t play against Wales.”

Teams:

Wales:

South Africa:

  • BALSAK(alias Blue Bul Hater) - 2010-06-03 14:58

De Jongh should have been in the original starting team. As these two Stormers STARS will carry the number 12 and 13 Jerseys for many years to come. It's ONLY Juan De Villiers that will be abe to replace De Jongh in the starting line up not Wynand Olivier!!! Springbox and WP JOU LEKKA DENG!!!!

  • StuartW - 2010-06-03 15:01

'n Baie goeie span hierdie....mag hulle Wallis goed opvoeter

  • Simple Simon - 2010-06-03 15:02

As with the Beast and citizenship; surely SARFU before they announce a team sort these things out, or is that just too too simple

I think premier rugby are cutting their nose off to spite their face. The reasons given are illogical and childish. They want to attract South Africans into their rugby teams and i hope our players will think twice before plying their tarde in the UK. They expect their players to be released and i hope they understand the wheel turns. Premier Rugby you are a pathetic bunch of whinging poms

  • witseun - 2010-06-03 15:12

Juan de Jongh is a superstar in the making. He is a class act, and he has shown it throughout the season. Butch was always just going to be a short term solution. If Juan de Jongh, Jean de Villiers, Jacque Fourie and Wynand Olivier could all be in top form, the Boks will be UNSTOPPABLE.

  • Komkol - 2010-06-03 15:15

Waar is Schalk Brits ou Div?

  • objective - 2010-06-03 15:17

wow, they give just about any old rugby player a bok cap these days !!! Aplon is more like u15 rugby player then a professional wing !!! and de Jongh reminds me of the new Adrian Jacobs, small, useless and picked for the wrong reasons. He has proved in his two mid-week games last year that he lacks both the physical presence and penetration to play on the soft surfaces in Europe !!! lets hope Jamie Roberts, the lions centre who destroyed our midfield last year during the lions series, does not brake him in half !!! the only good thing is that the Butch experiment at 12 is not repeated again because it did not work before. He should be played at ten not at 12 !!

  • Springbok Fan - 2010-06-03 15:22

A pretty good B-side line up if you ask me. Only change I'd make is starting Ruaan at 9 and now that Butch isn't avaiable possibly starting Grant at 10. Januarie can't even make the Stormers line up, yet he gets the nod for the Boks. NTS about that. Maybe if he didn't eat so many pies he'd be able to capture the form he showed many many many many moons ago.

  • Blou Bul - 2010-06-03 15:23

Moet sê De Jongh is 'n goeie keuse. GO BOKKE!!!

  • Black Panther - 2010-06-03 15:26

Ricky and Odwa must be discarded like Earl and Adi

  • Bulls fan forever - 2010-06-03 15:30

@BALLAS. Dream on briesie. Olivier is being rested for the real Bok side

  • Mark - 2010-06-03 15:30

Wynand is strate beter as enige ander senter in SA.

In my lewe nog nie sulke snert gehoor soos hy kwytraak nie.........wonder of hy al ooit by n rugbywedstryd was.

Vroeg ryp, vroeg vrot.

  • Gabba - 2010-06-03 15:34

Well done Juan. All of the best to you and the team.

  • Bolla - 2010-06-03 15:36

Hoor die Super14 beker is oppad WP toe..... Weer Pretoria... Sorry just had to get that in.

  • Paul - 2010-06-03 15:47

@Effie. Nee, as dit enige donner kon wees sou hulle jou gekies het...

  • Greg - 2010-06-03 15:52

Just give them the game why don't you. It's going be embarrasing. Ricky Januarie, you gotta be kidding.

  • Lefty@balsak - 2010-06-03 15:52

Waarvan praat jy ?? Jou twee sterre kon niks uitgevoeg kry teen die Bulle nie man .

  • Uli - 2010-06-03 16:01

With Jean de Villiers returning to WP and probably to the Springbok bench (behind Wynand Olivier) some time later, its best for Juan to get as much gametime as possible now. Going forward he'll be warming the bench in Cape Town.

  • Manenberg is where it's happening - 2010-06-03 16:03

@Balsak. Are you referring to the same 12 & 13 who were going to punch holes in the Bulls backline so wide you can drive a bus through? de Jongh is rubbish - his footwork looks like he's trying to stamp out a zol because the police 'vangwa' is cruising past. The ability to steal hubcaps from moving cars doesn't make you a good player.

  • @Effie - 2010-06-03 16:04

  • Greg - 2010-06-03 16:11

Wynand Olivier needs to rest and reflect on the amount of knock on's he commit in the Super 14. He is without a doubt the knock on specialist in SA rugby currently. Other than that he is a good player (when he is not knocking on the ball)

  • MB - 2010-06-03 16:15

Odwa and john smit - only two odwans out- rather play Brits and van der heever

  • Uli - 2010-06-03 16:17

Juan de Jongh is one of the reasons there were 8 other teams in Super14 this year that scored more tries than the Stormers, only 4 more tries than the Lions at the bottom of the log. Moments of brilliance alone won't cut in Super rugby, let alone in internationals.

  • Neels - 2010-06-03 16:20

Reading previous comments from idiots like BALSAK(alias Blue Bul Hater), I now realise that there is not a single objective opinion is SA about any Springbok candidate available. Why must we always stick to club alliances when a national team is selected? Why can't we just look at the players and acknowledge it if a player from another club is better? You are doing the same to rugby as the quota system except, instead of basing it on colour, you base it on club. Shame...

  • @BALSAK - 2010-06-03 16:20

Having noted your idiotic postings over the past weeks, I really think that you simply post moronic sentiment (under several aliases) in order to provoke reaction. I find it hard to believe that anyone could such a neanderthal.

  • piepies - 2010-06-03 16:26

BALSAK you p***k. No wonder everyone has been lashing out at Stormer supporters; nipple rings like you have been giving them a bad name. The Bulls supporters have Steve Hofmeyer and Kurt Darren dragging thier name through the swamp, but even those two muppets show more class (if that were possible) than you. Go jolly your lolly somewhere else.

  • peebo - 2010-06-03 17:08

@Mark - the most sense I've read for ages - agree wholeheartedly.Hougaard can replace FDP at scrumhalf right now - he is a great player and the Bulls wasted him on the wing. Come on Rassie - haul out the cheque book!!!!

  • WP man - 2010-06-03 17:11

Goeie keuse!

  • @Uli (WP man) - 2010-06-03 17:14

  • Greegs - 2010-06-03 17:16

Filling the gaps is all Div is doing. He loves giving the WP boys bok blazers. Personally I don't think the Boks can win this....altho hope they do! And then next week it's the French in CPT with a completely different side....makes you drink doesn't it? "What chops"

  • @Ballietjiesakkie - 2010-06-03 17:23

@peebo

  • @WP man (Uli ) - 2010-06-03 18:00

  • Lloydster(uk) - 2010-06-03 21:48

Its obviously a political B side playing here in Cardiff but the word is out that the boks are going to get another hiding by Wales. SARFU blunders will cost more than pride by fielding this side. Its crazy and degrading for us expats but the locals will enjoy the win.

  • Ag No - 2010-06-03 23:22

What team is this? Every time the Boks are due to play in Europe a few real Boks are added to a bunch of losers. Our record against the Irish for the past three years has been a big fat 0. Wales and France will be happy to host this unsettled, hotch-potch horde of mostly second and third XV 'Boks'. Why tour now with the Tri-Nations coming up? How about the European teams tour SA for a change, while we are at full strength? Why even add our real Boks to this rubbish team? Just send the second-rate players and rest our top Boks. Matfield should put his feet up at home, he's a national treasure.

  • Megan - 2010-06-04 00:22

oh I bet this is eating up all the HORID blue bulls supporters!

  • Megan - 2010-06-04 00:23

B side or not its still a bloody good side! they should sort the welsh out!

  • Blondybox - 2010-06-04 08:33

I really don't get it. Ricky January isn't even good enough to make the starting line-up of his own team, yet he's first choice for the Springboks. Can somebody please explain PdV thoughts for me?? Or are we back at the stage where it's about colour and not merit.

  • lk - 2010-06-04 08:37

Proud Stormer and SA Supporter !!

  • NoLogic - 2010-06-04 09:03

The Boks embarrassed the nation on their outbound tour last year with more losses than wins (even against Leicester & Saracens) and the country was crying for some form of sensibility when putting on the green & gold - and as true as God they go and screw up again. I wish I had a job where I could underperform continually and still be rewarded well. It's going to be a record win for the Welsh.Thank God I'm not an expat in the UK this weekend.

Joe Van Niekerk? Over Kanko...Snor you're smoking some stash there dude!

  • Ray - 2010-06-04 10:30

I agree with "Blou Bul" about Wynand. Juan is really an excellent CENTRE, I think people who has played in this position will agree and will know why I say he is excellent. The best about de Jongh is that he is very young, he holds a great and exciting future. If Fourie du Preez is ruled out, maybe they should give Ruan Pienaar a fair and well deserved chance at no 9 this season?
