Bulls let slip Meyer's Bok job

2012-01-25 12:19

Pretoria - The Blue Bulls Rugby Union (BBRU) on Wednesday confirmed that the South African Rugby Union's (SARU) intent to employ their director of rugby, Heyneke Meyer, as the next Springbok coach.

"At a meeting called by SARU, on Tuesday, January 24, with the Blue Bulls Company's Board of Directors, SARU informed the Blue Bulls Board of their intention to offer Heyneke Meyer the position of national coach," the Blue Bulls said.

The BBRU, however, said it was not in their interests to release Meyer after many "resources and commitments" have been made in order to enable Meyer to fulfil his mandate.

"Should Meyer however decide to accept the position of national coach, he needs to inform the Blue Bulls Board of his decision to abdicate his responsibilities and commitments to the Blue Bulls."

SARU will announce the new Springbok coach at a Special General Council meeting on Friday at 14:00.

    more bulls rugby....dammit!

      Michael - 2012-01-25 12:59

Boring and losing rugby to come, kick and chase and punch anything infront of you. Thugs like bakkies botha and james dalton were made in moftus!

      Johnny - 2012-01-25 13:07

@Michael - James Dalton played for Transvaal and EP

      eric.vanvuuren - 2012-01-25 13:14

The job should have been his from the start. The bulls suffer since his departure from coaching the best super rugby team SA has ever put together. And before all you people from the lesser provinces go up in a roar. The wins still stand, or "the proof is in the pudding” as they say.

      Riaan - 2012-01-25 13:17

@ Michael - Have every watched a rugby game??? James Dalton played for the Lions (or then TVL) coached by WC winning Coach Kitch Christie!!!! Heyneke has won 4 CC and a Super Title between 2002 and 2007. Taking over a losing Northern Bulls team and developing the core of the WC winning team of 2007. This crop also won the 2009 & 2010 Super titles under now head coach Frans Ludeke. His style might be construed as boring, but you can never say it's a losing methodology!!!

      Johnny - 2012-01-25 13:30

When last did a Bulls player/representative/manager coach the Springboks ? Give Heyneke a chance and lets see how it goes on the scoreboard at least.

      Alan - 2012-01-25 13:32

Ah Michael, I wouldn't say that. The guy's got a damn good record. He took a team that were, dare I say, worse than the stormers and built them up from the ground. I think this appointment is about 4 years overdue.

      Bryan - 2012-01-25 13:33

The best super rugby coach in S.A history.. and that is a proven fact. For those of you who say the bulls play kick and chase rugby.. check the stats, '09 37 tries(4th highest in competition) '10, 47 tries(Highest in competition)... and by the way folks, '07, 45 tries(2nd highest in the competion). 3 Super rugby titles in 5 years, all of which were won when Heynecke Meyer was in charge... Sour grapes??? 0 0 Reply to Bryan | 0 comments (hide) | Delete

Down under they're laughing again. Knowing that they need not even practice running rings round the next crop of concrete pillars.

      Paul - 2012-01-25 14:16

@ Lioyd Under Meyer the Bulls scored the most tries in 2007 S14 including an 92-3 win over the REDS , so before you comment take a look at your own useless team ...I bet you a WP or Shark fan !

      Michael - 2012-01-25 14:53

James played for the Cats,BULLS and Lions ,http://www.whoswhosa.co.za/james-dalton-4550. His thuggery was sharpened in moftus before he was a lion.

      Johnny - 2012-01-25 14:54

Let me just correct my comment above "James Dalton played for Transvaal and EP " He played for Transvaal and EP too, appart from the Bulls, and for TVL prior to the Bulls... so he was not made at Loftus and the Bulls alone cannot be associated with him or as you call him "a thug".

      uwe.klopfer - 2012-01-25 15:37

@Lloyd : As i recall Meyer took each game and had the best game plan for it, (something old Snorre could never do) depending on the opposition. Sometimes it was boring kick and chase but many a time the bulls plays some very exciting rugby. I think that Meyer can, and will, have adapted to how rugby has changed. If kick and chase won't work he won't use it. And test rugby isn't about scoring 5 tries a match, it is about winning. Yes it is nicer to win 40-7 than 9-6 but its who wins, not by how much which counts in the end.

  • James - 2012-01-25 12:30

    In what way Cossie?

  • Deon - 2012-01-25 12:30

Let us hope Saru does not get a call again, to change the coach.

  • Bongani - 2012-01-25 12:32

I must say good selection, but knowing South Africans we will be criticizing him in few months’ times. He should not worry criticizing coaches is our hobby. if you win all test matches, it because the other teams were tired, if you field experienced bok players, when are we going to try new players, if you try new players and we lose, why didn’t we use our tried and tested players, winning is a habit. I am just saying Mr. Meyer whatever you do will be questioned and do not take us serious, we are bored.

      Blou-Daan - 2012-01-25 12:34

      @Bongani Well said :-)

      clivegoss - 2012-01-26 07:06

Bongani you and I could watch rugby the game. Accurately stated Go Meyer go ! !

      Jimmy - 2012-01-26 14:08

Spoken like a man of true understanding and wisdom... Bongani you sir sound like a proper Gent!

  • cosmos.ndebele - 2012-01-25 12:33

The Boks needs a transfomational figure with good managerial skills, a guy who can withstand politics because this job has a nasty baggage that comes with it.

      ruanpretorius1980 - 2012-01-25 15:08

Please give us a such an example of who is a qualified transformational figure in SA Rugby WITH good managerial skills who can withstand the politics that goes along with the job

      Hoo - 2012-01-25 20:15

@cosmos die enigste "nasty baggage" wat saam kom of probeer, is jy my onkruitjie...en en en daar bestaan nie so iets soos 'n "transfomational figure with good managerial skills" nie?!! hoop jy verstaan my mooi.

  • Graham - 2012-01-25 12:42

Moftus Bulls looking to fill the coffers with a fat cheque from SARU. SARU in turn must be pissed that everyone knows now, taking away any advantage of negotiation and they cannot back away from it.

      Anet - 2012-01-25 13:13

  • ysterjan - 2012-01-25 12:42

Can't believe he would do this after they stuck a knife in him 4 years ago!!

      Marcell - 2012-01-26 01:43

Wat het van integriteit geword? Hy het 'n vierjaar kontrak. Sorry saru, cheers.

  • vanrooyenmara - 2012-01-25 12:42

      Blou-Daan - 2012-01-25 12:50

@vanrooyenmara Se ek ook mos altyd........!!!! :-)

      Marni - 2012-01-25 13:05

      Hoo - 2012-01-25 20:22

@marni- my skattebol, dis ni waar vandaan jy kom ni!, maaaaar waarheen jy gaan ne'... in die geval die BUL PARADYS. di springhaasbokke leen hom net vir 'n kort rukkie- 8 jare??! seen vir hulle

  • Gerhard - 2012-01-25 12:43

As a Western Province supporter, I must say that I am happy if this is an actual fact. At least the Bokke will have a genuine coach to take them forward. Heyneke Meyer is the correct man for the job. Good luck in building a new Bok team.

      Final.Punishment - 2012-01-25 13:25

@Gerhard; I am also a proud Stormers\WP supporter and disliking the Bulls has got nothing to do with the fact that HM can do the job. I support Springbok Rugby, and HK is a winning[we hope] coach.

      bern1975 - 2012-01-26 10:00

  • rashied.wilkinson - 2012-01-25 12:57

With Erusmas and Meyer we've got from the best minds in the game... Exciting times... But what do i do with that fake PDV mustache now :/

      Riaan - 2012-01-25 13:23

      jaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!

  • Anet - 2012-01-25 13:13

      Lionel - 2012-01-25 13:27

Jy praat darem baie mooi vir n "dame"!!!!!!!

      Anet - 2012-01-25 13:53

Van wanneer af is KOTS n vloekwoord?

      Johnny - 2012-01-25 14:09

@Anet - Lionel verwys na "Streepdonkies" (LOL)

      Lionel - 2012-01-25 14:23

Nice one Johnny...lol@Anet,op gooi so n beter keurse gewees it,maar ja,jou keurse!!!!!!!!!!!

      Melt - 2012-01-25 14:38

      Johnny - 2012-01-25 14:55

Almal in elk geval tjankbalies.

      Anet - 2012-01-25 20:14

  • JoffeyCampino - 2012-01-25 13:19

What more do you guys want? I mean, it doesn't matter who you put in there...there will always someone moaning about how much better someone else can be, for instance take John Mitchell...Mitchell has no desire to coach the Springboks and unlike Robbie Deans won't turn on the Allblacks so that my friends is out... Rassie at the Stormers (before he left) managed to win nothing, although build a really strong team to take forward.... How dare some of you question the ability of Heyneke Meyer? who took a mediocre Bulls team to the leading team in South Africa. The man's credentials says it all...you supported a "joke" for 4 years and already you are denying a man his chance of doing something we can all be proud of, who cares about ten man rugby? I only care about beating the other team....the scoreboard counts!!!

  • Chris - 2012-01-25 13:22

      Alan - 2012-01-25 13:41

Such is the nature of the professional game.

  • Patrick - 2012-01-25 13:29

Well it is the worst kept secret in the world. Heynecke Meyer should've got the job on merit 4 years ago and hats off to him for still being ambitious enough to want the job. That said SARU have once again acquitted themselves very poorly. The timing of this appointment meant that obviously all the current Super XV coaches weren't in the running. Let's get it right guys. If you aren't going to renew the coach's contract, do your homework/interviewing sooner so that all the teams have time to make alternative plans.

  • Bryan - 2012-01-25 13:30

The best super rugby coach in S.A history.. and that is a proven fact. For those of you who say the bulls play kick and chase rugby.. check the stats, '09 37 tries(4th highest in competition) '10, 47 tries(Highest in competition)... and by the way folks, '07, 45 tries(2nd highest in the competion). 3 Super rugby titles in 5 years, all of which were won when Heynecke Meyer was in charge... Johnny - 2012-01-25 14:32

Yes, but he wasnt made at Loftus. (what I meant)

  • ivan.coetzee2 - 2012-01-25 14:38

Ag shame, SARU's thunder was stolen by the Bulls Union, lol, who cares, why did it need to be a state secret? If he was offered and he accepted the so what, good for him, hope they pay him well.

  • stephan.sleigh - 2012-01-25 14:45

Hope its not 4 years too late for Meyer.

      Selma - 2012-01-25 14:56

I am sure he would have prefered to have his tried and trusted Victor, Bakkies and Fourie in his side. He was denied. Lets hope he can build a great team. I do not envy him choosing a captain. Bleed Strauss for the position?

  • Andre - 2012-01-25 15:00

here's the thing-National duty takes preference over provincial duty.I am a stern Bulls supporter, but want to say to the powers at Bulls rugby:stop moaning about his release as you do not want to become a western province saga where the management hierarchy is in tatters-do not dissappoint us.

  • Emile - 2012-01-25 15:30

The Bulls should be happy for Meyer , its a privilege and a honour to coach the Boks, he is well respected by the players, hopefully Oregan Hoskins will stay out of his way & out of SA Rugby ! Rassie will join him and they will make a mean team !! under Heyneke we will be Boks again not proteas!!!! Go Bokke !!!!

  • Tracy - 2012-01-25 15:43

Does it really matter which franchise the national coach comes from? As long as he has earned the position (track record, etc) & doesn't embarrass the nation, we should support him! GO BOKKE!!!
