Sydney - The Brumbies have released injury-hit former captain Stephen Hoiles from the final year of his Super Rugby contract.

Hoiles, who was the Brumbies captain in 2009 and 2010, played only the opening game of the 2011 season as he continued to battle an Achilles tendon injury.

The 30-year-old backrower said on Wednesday that his departure from the Brumbies had been mutually agreed, adding "my rehab is coming along well and it's my intention to return to the playing field in the not too distant future. Where exactly that will be is something that will unravel in the months ahead."
