Buderus, who has played 24 internationals, will still play with the Newcastle Knights in Australia's National Rugby League in 2013 but assist Jake White's coaching staff in the collision part of training.
White, the former South Africa World Cup-winning coach, has identified the initial contact in defence as an area they can improve in his second season at the Brumbies and sees Buderus, 34, as the perfect mentor to make that happen.
In 15 years as a league player, Buderus captained New South Wales to their last State of Origin series win over Queensland in 2005, won an NRL Grand Final with the Knights in 2001 and an English Super League title with Leeds in 2011.
He will enter his final season with the Knights next year and said the chance to kick-start his coaching career with the Brumbies was exciting.
"Coaching is something I've always thought would be an interesting way to keep a connection with the sport once I'd finished playing and this opportunity certainly allows me to start the ball rolling," he said.
"While all of my professional experience has been with rugby league, I've got an interest in all sports and have followed the progress of the Wallabies over the years."
