Cape Town New Zealand captain Kieran Read has praised the British and Irish Lions' showing after the All Blacks went 1-0 up in the series on Saturday.

Their 30-15 victory saw Codie Taylor and Rieko Ioane (2) cross while 15 points from flyhalf Beauden Barrett proved crucial at Eden Park.

After the victory, the returning Read paid tribute to the Lions who had them on the ropes at time in a thrilling opening match of the series.

"I thought it was a hell of a Test match," he told Sky Sports.

"We certainly got tested in that first-half and just after half-time probably our defence then won us the game. We held them out and when we got an opportunity we took it.

"They played outstanding. It showed two teams working really hard for each other. It was a tough Test match and I guess momentum changes a few times in games but we took our opportunities.

"It's one (1-0) and we'll get back to the drawing board next week."
