Trio debut for Boks

2010-12-01 13:45

Cape Town - The uncapped trio of centre Andries Strauss, flyhalf Elton Jantjies and prop Coenie Oosthuizen will make their first appearance in the Springbok jersey on Saturday when they were named in the starting line-up to meet the Barbarians in the season-ending finale at Twickenham.

A fourth player - scrumhalf Charl McLeod - could make his debut from the bench. The match does not have Test status.

The line-up shows 12 changes to the XV who ended the Test series with a 21-11 win over England on Saturday - seven of them forced by injuries and unavailability, while coach Peter de Villiers has taken the opportunity to give game time to squad members who have not appeared to date.

Ruled out by injury are Victor Matfield, Jean de Villiers, Jannie du Plessis, Bismarck du Plessis and Zane Kirchner. Frans Steyn and Ruan Pienaar have returned to their European clubs.

Lock Alistair Hargreaves appears for the first time on tour along with late call-up Odwa Ndungane, while Pat Lambie, Adi Jacobs, Willem Alberts, Adriaan Strauss and CJ van der Linde all make their first starts on tour.

“The newcomers have been waiting for their chance and will bring energy and enthusiasm to the line-up at the end of a long season,” said De Villiers. “They have trained well and been patient throughout the tour and this is their chance to show what they can do.”

Lambie gets his first Springbok start at fullback while Jantjies wears the No 10 jersey.

“They are exciting talents and this way they both get maximum opportunity in the match,” said De Villiers. “But I’ve stressed to them and to all of the team that this match is not about personal performance but about performing as a team – if they do that they will all be successful.”

The Springboks have won three and lost three of their six meetings with the Barbarians since the first game in 1952 and De Villiers said the Springboks faced another severe challenge.

“The Barbarians have brought together a very exciting team that is definitely made to play rugby in the traditional Barbarian style,” said De Villiers. “Nick [Mallett, Barbarians coach] will have taken note of what is an untried backline combination and there’s no doubt he’ll be focusing his attention there.

“But Juan Smith [Springbok captain] and the players are determined to maintain the improvements of this tour and this game is set to be a fascinating contest.”

Bismarck du Plessis has taken a lot of contact and is still recovering, so the decision was taken to rest him for this match.

Seriously unbalanced loose trio for the Boks. I would rather have seen: 8) Alberts 7) Juan 6) Keegan Daniel. Otherwise OK, considering.

      RugbyFanatic - 2010-12-01 14:06

What is unbalanced? Ryan and Alberts play like that for the Sharks. With Keegan.

      Erick Visser - 2010-12-01 14:19

      I agree!

      Dan the Man - 2010-12-01 14:23

That is Cliffs point - Keegan and Juan Smith play totally different games, so playing kanko and alberts with smith is a bit unbalanced. I would have picked the same loose trio as Cliff

      Kagiso - 2010-12-01 14:50

True, who's gonna be fetching? We may suffer at breakdown points because unlike us the Baabaas will spread the ball for 80 minutes and always be looking to play quick ball with our slow loose trio. But I guess we will have to wait and c.

  • Rob - 2010-12-01 14:05

Will be a great combination with Jantjies at flyhalf and Lambie at the back. Struass was in devastating form in the latter stages of the Currie Cup so let's hope that continues. Good to test the uncapped guys at this level as this game is not of huge consequence seeing it doesn't have test status. I hope Charl McLeod gets a good run too. Given the experience in this Baabaas line up i can't see us winning, but you never know!

  • WeZo - 2010-12-01 14:07

DAM!!!! That Barbarians team is KILLER!!!!! the SA team looks like a upper-middle table Super14 team. Go the Bokke!!!!!!

      Jan - 2010-12-01 14:45

      Agree

  • Egg-Zachary - 2010-12-01 14:10

Very excited to see Jantjies start. That boy has some mad skills! Very proud!

      deneiler - 2010-12-01 15:14

Yep me too, thought he would never get a chance on this tour!

  • Marcus Daily - 2010-12-01 14:14

    10 Sharks players!

      Rob - 2010-12-01 14:16

      planter.grant64 - 2010-12-01 14:25

I get 11 from the Sharks, go boys!!!

      Johnny - 2010-12-01 14:39

......still to many WP players in the team....

      Roderick - 2010-12-01 14:40

There are 11 Sharks in the 22 man squad. Its nice to see that the entire backline outside of Jantjes are Sharks players!

      Makutu - 2010-12-01 14:44

      11

      Johann - 2010-12-01 14:52

Ja, but in this case 10 players don't make a Sharks team, these are SPRINGBOKS!!! GOOO BOKKE !!!!

      JP - 2010-12-01 15:25

ha ha ha ha. True Johnny True!!! ha ha ha

      Makutu - 2010-12-01 17:07

      LOL Jonny!

      JP - 2010-12-02 06:49

i think they should change that song 2: "maak die sharks almal bokke"!!!!!!!!!!! i hope they can pull it off!

      Scuba - 2010-12-02 09:36

It is 10 guys.......Strauss is a Cheetah now.

  • planter.grant64 - 2010-12-01 14:31

I get 11 players from yhe Sharks, go boys !!!!

  • Craig - 2010-12-01 14:36

I think it is not all that bad - think about it for a moment before you just go and blast the guy. The only issue I have is with Adi, but also just because he has not played in a while. I am very exited to see Elton go a flyhalf. He could put himself ahead of Lambie if he gets a good game - and I am sure it is going through his mind all the time. I think leaving Aplon out is risky but it allows PDV to give Andries, Lambie and Elton a chance all at once. I think it will be interesting to see how the guys go and if they make use of their chances. Hope PDV told the guys to just have a crack at it and enjoy the experience. At least we have Juan there - he will keep things calm and get the guys through. I think if we can keep ball in hand, and it looks like that is the plan, it should be a great game to watch. Looking forward to seeing Andries go and also Alberts with a longer stint from the start. Good Luck boys and let kick some BAA BAA ass. Score 24 - 19 for our boys. GO BOKKE

      EddyJ - 2010-12-01 15:20

I agree with you. It is all about game time. The more you play, the more experienced you become. What's the use you have the talent but don't get the opportunity to grow it.

      siphosm - 2010-12-01 16:44

Craig do you not think that Lambie is actually the better allround player here? He slots in comfortaably at 12,15 and makes magic at 10. Jantjies unfortunately will be another Ricky Januarie and there's a similar career path for them? Anyway for the rest I can't wait to see this backline tick!!! I hope Charl Macleod get's a run on

  • BOKLDN - 2010-12-01 14:51

When there are so many new faces, playing Aplon and Beast would havebeen wiser but wise is not something we associate with our beloved coach. Kanko is rubbish but if there is a game that he might play will, its the baa baas game. Probably better if he played for them. Coenie better tackle like the Beast if he wants to be taken sersiously. How is there a replacement missing? Do they not know who will play yet? can't wait for the World Cup to be over and then, even if we win - PDV can F off. He is so dof.

      Durasmart - 2010-12-01 16:20

Werner Kruger has just been called up onto the bench

      JP - 2010-12-02 06:53

BEAAAAAAAAASTTTTT! i am so glad 2 see "BEE" players actually being there on merrit. Mvovo, beast! you guys give this so called transformation policy of SARU new hope!

  • Kaapie - 2010-12-01 14:55

Would rather have Gio as opposed Odwa. Would like to see Daniels get a chance as this should be his type of game

      Makutu - 2010-12-01 15:13

      The team is alright man

  • Bitterpoep - 2010-12-01 14:57

is that a WP team ..???

  • Brandon96end - 2010-12-01 15:00

....... Bar a miracle we are going to get hammered.

      Simon - 2010-12-02 12:52

      Agreed....

  • schumi - 2010-12-01 15:00

all the sharks may be because Ian Mac is head of selectors

      Rob - 2010-12-01 15:41

Or maybe because the sharks won the currie cup = best players.. Very higher grade i know

      Andre - 2010-12-01 16:20

LOL Rob. I am also a SHARK supporter (fanatical) But, I like to keep provincialism out of discussions about Bok Rugby. Let's leave that to the pathetic Bulls supporters who always try and allege that the BULLS are the Springboks and other utter stupidities.

  • MikeA - 2010-12-01 15:04

I see Janjies been steam rolled! Nonu is going to make his life hell...... I hope I am wrong. Good luck Bokke

  • 2coolnick - 2010-12-01 15:10

I wont agree 100% with the selection but to see all the young talent in the team is really super!! I think PDV is going to change Jantjies half way through with Lambie and put Aplon at full back. That is now if the guys arent doing good. But I think Lambie at fullback and Jantjies at fly half is going to give us all a very nice surprise. And Coenie, he is going to have some nice sprints with the ball!! Keegan and Charl will get there chance. And they will bring something extra to the game. No matter what any one say before any Springbok game, I am always very excited and LOVE my Springboks!!! I'm the second best Springbok supporter....with the best supporter still to be born

  • Retha - 2010-12-01 15:12

AN Other played a brilliant game in the S14 final. Would have loved to see him against the Scotts. Could probably have pulled that one through on his own. Always thought he hasn't been recognised for his talent to date. manage him well then we can one day have AN Other coach.

      donkerhond - 2010-12-01 15:37

I lolled. Seriously. Also wondered who AN Other could be... :?

  • JP - 2010-12-01 15:18

Just reward for all the sharks players on there good season. SHARKS vs BABA's If they pull this one off, they'll have 2 change that song 2 "maak die SHARKS almal bokke"

  • Japie - 2010-12-01 15:40

    Saterday's score: Baabaas 60 - Natal 3

      Sh@rks Fever - 2010-12-01 16:47

If the Sharks loose we will blame it on AN other.

  • Luc Quevauvilliers - 2010-12-01 15:59

Who the hell is AN Other? Look in our replacements, third name... ????? :)

      Durasmart - 2010-12-01 16:21

      Werner Kruger

  • Weepee - 2010-12-01 16:00

Oh Dear - the backline defense looks shaky. Straus can tackle and Lambie holds his own. School boys versus seasoned pros. If the Baa Baas get good ball they will wreak havoc. The pack looks competitive so lets hope for the best. Also a fantastic experience for the young guys - lets hope they hold their own. The other problem is the bok coaches have all left to go home so it's PDV versus Mallett. Ja met uys!

  • themantshepo - 2010-12-01 16:08

what is a sprinbok???? the only springbok i know is a dead springbok...... if you have not got the memo yet then let me give it to you morons..... the springbucks have been tranformed/still busy being transformed they are now known as the proteas got it.... PROTEAS, although VROTEAS sounds better....

      siphosm - 2010-12-01 16:47

Dude you are an embarrassment to black people. Go toy-toy with JuJu or something you nitwit!!!!

      slowysa - 2010-12-02 13:33

go shout VROTEAS to your soccer team and leave our SPRINGBOKS ALONE!!!!!

  • louis botha - 2010-12-01 16:09

I agree giving yung blood the experience but please no one in the backline with realy any experience I just dont know but JONG BOKKE MAAK ONS TROTS EN DOEN NET JULLE BESTE ONS STAAN AGTER JULLE

  • Shayne - 2010-12-01 17:01

Wouldn't it be funny if this team gave the Barbarians their worst hiding ever?? Like by 50 points.. Now THAT would raise some serious questions.. I doubt it though. Either way i think this game is going to be a cracker! cant wait! Good luck guys..

  • Claude - 2010-12-01 17:08

The team is made up of a number of untested players at this level and some replacements that are be lucky to be there. It will be good to see how they perform but I think the unluckiest player of all is Keegan Daniels who should have been given a start for this type of game. There is the option for early changes and I hope it is used. Given the scratch together nature of the side even if there is a large number of Sharks I will be watching for entertainment rather than with any major expectations against a very experienced team of players.

  • Wietsche - 2010-12-01 19:03

So is it SA against Australasia...?

  • Christie - 2010-12-01 19:24

Pat Lambie, SA rugby's sparewheel. Go oversees and make a career for yourself son. These morons will rob you of self believe!!

      StaalBurgher - 2010-12-01 20:41

Well, I do predict that IF Jantjies is not better than Lambie in the coming years, and does not crash and burn completely, he will still play flyhalf for the Boks regardless. Lambie will be the one that has to move even if he outperforms Jantjies at flyhalf. The Sharks will continue to play Lambie at flyhalf and then he will have to move about like a marionette for the Boks. Then again, Jantjies might end up being the better player. I will be referring people back to these statements of mine in the years to come. I better Favourite this article right now.

  • StaalBurgher - 2010-12-01 20:37

It'll be good to see these guys have a run. With the number of games that we are playing I don't care that we are playing a 3rd string team. Rather that than more injuries.

  • Rooikat - 2010-12-01 21:59

    Let's hope they do brilliantly.

  • Scuba - 2010-12-02 09:41

I am personally not to worried,I like idea of all the youngsters playing together,I just hope it will be for more than just this game.......in other words let this team play the trinations next year and rest the big boys then select the best from both the youngsters that stand up as well as the toppies.
