Dubai - The Springboks' plea for further action after the alleged eye gouging incident by Irish loose forward, Jamie Heaslip, has fallen on deaf ears.
The match citing commissioner of the Test between Ireland and South Africa at Croke Park in Dublin, Douglas Hunt, decided that no further action against Heaslip was necessary.
Hunt was asked by the Springboks to look at an incident where Heaslip allegedly had his fingers in Heinrich Brüssow's eyes.
A piece of skin was torn off Brüssow’s brow just above his eye, but Hunt could not find any evidence of the incident.
The Irish Rugby Union is disappointed that Heaslip was subsequently associated with eye gouging in the media as a result of an unsubstantiated referral.
“The Irish management is unhappy about the fact that the name of an Irish player was eventually identified for eye gouging. The Irish management believe in and supports the identification procedure, but such identifications must first be made known if there are tangible witnesses. We are adamant about our feelings towards the incident," said the statement.
JP Pietersen (high tackle) and Andries Bekker (knee to David Wallace’s back) were apparently also pointed out by the Irish for their foul play, but Hunt decided to let everyone off scot-free.
