Basson out of Bok tour

2010-11-14 15:08

Edinburgh - The Springboks suffered a huge setback after their 29-25 victory over Wales on Saturday as wing Bjorn Basson was ruled out for the rest of the tour because of an ankle injury picked up during the match, the South African Rugby Union said in a statement on Sunday.

Basson sustained a grade two ankle sprain in the team's second consecutive victory on tour.

Although he did not get much ball throughout the match, he impressed under the high-ball and came close to scoring a try, but his handling skills let him down at a crucial stage.

A decision on whether to call for a replacement had not been made, as Sharks wing Lwazi Mvovo is in the group but is yet to earn his first Test cap.

Bring on Mvovu.. he can't do any worse than Basson did yesterday! Our wings both cost us try's yesterday, Habana by not passing out wide to Aplon and Basson who fumbled the ball withing 5 metres of the line! Can somone also tell PDivvy NOT to make subsitutions just because 60 minutes of the game has elapsed! Div seems to think that he has to give every player on the bench a run!

  • lekkersauce - 2010-11-14 15:36

Dalk is dit goed vir die bokke, MVOVO is n beter speeler want hy is hard om te tackle.

  • malcolm.molver - 2010-11-14 15:41

Aplon and Mvovo should be our wingers for the rest of the tour. I dont think Kirschner is up to international standard but we got no choice but to play him at fullback.

  • Pedro - 2010-11-14 15:41

Mvovu is the man! Forget the rest.

      Alan - 2010-11-14 16:14

Yebo! Give the ball to Mvovo

  • malcolm.molver - 2010-11-14 15:47

I bet right now that Snorre will not put Mvovo in the starting line-up. Expect Aplon on the wing, Kirschner at fullback and a horribly off form Habana retaining his place

  • TheGreenMan - 2010-11-14 15:51

Big blow. Not because Basson has proven to be invaluable, which he has not, but rather because Habana will definitely be on the pitch. I think whoever tweeted about him having to move on was spot on. He has had far too many chances to 'prove his worth' but simply always leaves his channel open going for the intercept.

      Dan the Man - 2010-11-14 16:20

well, we could drop them both and play aplon and mvovo at wing, with frans at fullback and lambie/jean as our centres...

      Magoo - 2010-11-14 16:46

      Dan the Man, SPOT ON!!

  • Wessie - 2010-11-14 17:25

Too bad it's not Habana thats out. But I suppose when you braai with the coach, you play on Saturday. Mvovu and Aplon on wing, Steyn at the back9cause he sucked, and so did Jean) and Kirchner on the bench for Kimberley Old Boys's second team. Is it scary to count the number of times the ball went to the wings via the backline?

      Makutu - 2010-11-15 07:29

LOL! Our backline was just poor.

  • skywalker - 2010-11-14 17:46

Could be a blessing in disguise if Mvovo gets to start....with Lambie and JdV at centre pairing....running outta time now for future combinations....we should beat Scotland but England will be the Big one..!

  • vanofsteel - 2010-11-14 18:07

Considering that he will not be dropped, it is inevitable that Habana will eventually be put into the corner to score. One or two tries and everyone will once again overlook the fact that he repeatedly creates an overlap for the opposition. His positional play is shocking! No-one ever notices this because he is not overtly missing tackles- he simply isn't in position to make them. I have been saying this for years! He is the worst wing in the world. Pull the stats- how many tries have been scored against the boks in his corner?

  • Rossman - 2010-11-14 18:32

Now is the time to play Mvovo. We need another wing though, to cover Habana's spot. He is definitely not all here. I am starting to believe all the negative hype about him. He was great when he had youth and speed on his side. Now he has neither. What then does he have to offer? If I constantly performed this bad for my employer, they will fire my ass. Contract or not.

      Branden - 2010-11-14 21:09

I agree Habana is out of form of late, but is he soley to blame? How many movements does our backline perform, maybe 4 forced ones? the backline is simply not utilised properly. JDV is terrible so is Frans. Habana will make a good centre at this stage if he stays in his position. Let the backline start moving and work as a unit, then we can truly blame Habana if he still doesnt perform......

      Makutu - 2010-11-15 07:28

I fully agree with you Branden.

  • shawnappel - 2010-11-14 21:24

u could put Bolt on the wing, doesnt matter, the ball pretty much never gets to wings, kicked away all the time. USE THE BACKS BOKS!

  • franssmith100 - 2010-11-14 23:16

big setback - play mvovu - habana still way out of form - they should have left haban at home and rather played aplon on wing, francois steyn on fullback and played terblanche or straus on centre.

  • Thomas - 2010-11-15 05:49

Although the injury is a sad blow it is not a huge one. Mvovo is there. To me a better option, as we found out against Wales ball in hand is the better option. This is their chance to bring in a big centre for the England game. I think Bossman or Strauss as we will need a good defender in the last quarter. The trouble when Lambie comes on we already in the" hold the floodgates mode" and the threequarters haven't exactly set the groung on fire, so we can't expect him to perform miricles.

  • Viv - 2010-11-15 08:48

Very dissapointing! A great asset lost here. But lets bring out Mvovo and give him a run. After all I think Mvovo vould kick Brian's a$s in a foot race. Sorry Bjorn - you really are a great player and hope to see you more in the Gold and Green.

  • Makutu - 2010-11-15 10:04

Good... I do not know why Mvovo never played in the 1st place? No winger on the bench? I know Fras Hougaards can cover numeber 11, but Mvovo can easily replace Bryan Habana.

  • Jaco - 2010-11-15 11:29

To all you shark poepolle. Basson is the best in sa, he proved that in the currie cup. Yes you won the cup, but we are bok supporters now, come on. Get with the program.

  • unratedexter - 2010-11-15 11:42

Best news of the year - Basson is swak - Mvovo is the form winger - he should've been used from the start.

      Makutu - 2010-11-15 12:19

  • Jaco - 2010-11-15 13:48
