Boks crush France at Newlands

2010-06-12 16:26

Cape Town - Winger Gio Aplon scored two tries and fly-half Morne Steyn kicked 15 points as world champions South Africa crushed France 42-17 at Newlands on Saturday.

The diminutive Aplon celebrated his first Test on home soil with two superb solo tries that broke the Six Nations champions' resolve and earned him the man-of-the-match award.

The Springboks netted a further three tries through their forwards on a day when the visitors were outplayed up front and regularly harried off the ball at the breakdowns.

The home side enjoyed a spectacular start, racing to a 14-0 lead after nine minutes and a 25-7 advantage with half an hour played.

Number eight Pierre Spies scored the first of three Springbok first-half tries when he dived over underneath the posts following a French mistake in the second minute.

France centre David Marty threw a loose pass on halfway that was intercepted by winger Bryan Habana, who in turn fed centre Jaque Fourie.

The veteran midfielder, playing his 56th Test, was quickly closed down but had the vision to feed an unmarked Spies on his left.

Aplon, who made his Test debut against Wales last weekend, got onto the scoresheet in the eighth minute when he bumped off centre Maxime Mermoz, before rounding the cover defence.

Steyn added the extra points before slotting two penalties to give his side a 20-0 lead.

France opened their account on the half hour when winger Aurelien Rougerie was freed down the right touchline for an easy run-in after the first sustained period of French pressure.

Scrumhalf Morgan Parra kicked the conversion and an injury-time penalty, but not before Springbok loosehead Gurthro Steenkamp scored his side's third try after Steyn floated a long pass to the unmarked prop forward standing on the tramlines.

Steyn extended the lead to 18 points soon after the restart when a French scrum infringement gifted the flyhalf three points from in front.

No sooner had play restarted than it was sevens star Aplon who brought the 46,885-strong crowd to their feet when he picked up a loose ball near his own line before sprinting away on a diagonal run for a length-of-the-field try.

The remainder of the half was characterised by numerous mistakes from both sides. The point-scoring drought was eventually ended when flanker Francois Louw barged over for his team's fifth try with five minutes remaining.

The visitors notched a consolation try through replacement winger Marc Andreu, converted by yet another substitute, David Skrela.

Scorers:

South Africa -
Tries: Pierre Spies, Gio Aplon (2), Gurthro Steenkamp, Francois Louw
Conversions: Morne Steyn (3), Ruan Pienaar
Penalties: Steyn (3).

France -

Tries: Aurelien Rougerie, Marc Andreu
Conversions: Morgan Parra, David Skrela
Penalty: Parra.

Brilliant!!!! Brilliant . Gio, Ricky, Morne, Francois Louw, Fourie, Schalk, Spies, Victor, Die OU GROOTTE- Guthro. What a wonderful team performance!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ricky FOR LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Sharky Andrew - 2010-06-12 16:31

Very impressive performance by the boks. very clinical right from the start. I reckon Zane Kirchner is out of his depth in the bok no 15 jersey though, I hope Pat Lambie is given a chance in that position when the Junior World cup is over.

  • WP man - 2010-06-12 16:33

'n Verskoning sal gepas wees

  • Roar! - 2010-06-12 16:34

Today proved that Aplon is far too small for testrugby, was lucky with his tries. He can not tackle big players.

  • Tempest - 2010-06-12 16:39

What a game! Wonder what all those Bulls fans will have to say about Aplon. What a player! Shadow who? Hougaard who?????

  • Priester - 2010-06-12 16:55

Greetings from Uganda, this article makes good reading. We had a power failure thus no TV or even streaming on the internet. I trust you guys (Bulawayo Bok, Deon and Emile) for some feedback on the match particular feedback on Zane, January and Olivier. Jammer Balsak ek wil nie jou hokkie skud nie, you are one-eyed and usually talk a lot of Bull sh......

  • Pieter V - 2010-06-12 17:11

Geo gaan nog diep spore trap in SA rugby. Well done!

  • blou bul - 2010-06-12 17:26

The bok scrum was stronger with 7 forwards than with 8 when john smit was playing, please please PDV drop that piggy backer now!! Geo - you go man!!! Yessis we played with the frenchies today, hope bafana does the same with their pathetic soccer team

  • blou bul - 2010-06-12 17:34

  • Stormtrooper - 2010-06-12 18:08

Gio Aplon was weereens fantasties. Zane was weereens aaklig. Drop vir Zane. Francois Louw was great!

  • Gnambeni - 2010-06-12 18:18

lol I am in France now and all French TV channels just went silent from last night, they feel very disappointed on the way les bleus played. You can’t believe how unfair the French media present the world cup, and this last two games really hurt the French. Up to now, nor TV talks about the rugby game. I just hop BAFANA BAFAN will beat the French again as the boks did and then we will see how pissed-off they will be. lol

  • poohbear - 2010-06-12 19:40

ag manne...ONS HET GEWEN!! V!VA DIE BOKKE!!

  • Gerhard - 2010-06-12 19:45

What a wonderful game!!! You go Bokke!!!! It was a wonderful team performance, every player gave his best, but we lacked some urgency in the last 20 min. Aplon was great on offence (2 great tries) Is he too small for international rugby? Only time will tell. I have a feeling he will do great in the future and he can certainly improve. I do not want to spoil a great game, so I will not say to much about certain players, but will voice my opinion! While Du Preez is out, get Pienaar on no9, and get Frans or Pietersen on 15. Anyone would could do better at 15, and thats coming from a Bulls supporter. Most of us (bulls supporters) know when someone is not up to Bok par. Maybe the 2 Tests against Italy is a good opportunity to give Petersen a change at 15 and give Ricky a "well deserved" rest.

  • Eric - 2010-06-12 20:18

Bulls supporters can say what they want about the Stormers players and Stormers supporters can say what they want about the Bulls players. But when these two teams play together(as the majority of the team consists of Bulls and Stormers players), something magical happens. Go Bokke!

  • hou by die blou - 2010-06-12 20:28

Bokke, julle is asemrowend fantasties vandag gewees! Ek is so trots om groen en goud te kan dra! Dankie manne!!

  • denise - 2010-06-12 20:56

All I want to say is I'm so sick & tired of reading all the negatives about certain players & who Div picks re age, province, colour/quota etc., PLEASE can those who slated Chiliboy & Rick etc., now shut up ............& give Div the space/choice has to have as Springbok coach - please support the Beast - he really doesn't derserve the deal he is being dished up - go Guthro - you're brilliant (even as a winger & from a Shark supporter)!!!

  • john - 2010-06-12 23:19

  • Megan - 2010-06-13 00:08

WELL DONE APLON!!!!!!! What a FANTASTIC player! He is a small package of dynamite! He not afraid to tackle the big boys and he does, and he darts across the field in no time! Go Aplon!

  • Kate - 2010-06-13 00:12

Zane needs to go!! sorry to say but he is a weak player.

  • Andre - 2010-06-13 01:23

Well done Ricky, i was one of those who was saying the hardest that you do not deserve your place in the team but you kept quiet and let your game do the talking, the only thing is you didnt talk, it was more like a shout, one hell of a game. Thanks for proving me wrong

  • Mr B - 2010-06-13 01:49

  • Stephan - 2010-06-13 04:08

Super game! Bafana AND Springboks did us proud!

  • Claude - 2010-06-13 07:14

The Springboks did us proud and I will be the first to admit I was wrong and that Ricky January had an excellent game and was in part responsible for our success. He was the right choice for the circumstances. I still think there are other scrumhalfs with better allround games but Ricky did the job and until Fourie du Preez is back he is the encumbant. Chilliboy came on when we had already won but also hardly put a foot wrong. Zane Kirchner was the only player who was not convincing. Gio proved that small with guts and class is up there with the best - what a great game. I still remember a previous Newlands game against the French where the great Frik Du Preez was charging down towards the try line with only the much smaller Serge Blanco to beat. Now there was a class fullback and he brought down Frik and saved a try. Bring back our best fullback Joe Peterson.

  • alice - 2010-06-13 08:03

fabulous first half ... not so great second half...please... ruaan pienaar....not an option..john smit..needs to be a bit more active..and chilliboy :-(...Spies is the best no 8.!!!! kirschner definitely has the capability, but needs more time...he will be great.. well done boks!!!

  • Cheetahs!!!!! - 2010-06-13 09:05

Roar! "6/12/2010 4:34 PM Today proved that Aplon is far too small for testrugby, was lucky with his tries. He can not tackle big players." - Geeez what game did you whatch - Man you are an A-hole of note... Gio deserve respect for this last game not your verbal kak.

  • Player 23 - 2010-06-13 09:16

Hou so aan. Cheers

  • brinjal - 2010-06-13 10:52

Well played Mr Aplon & Januarie, I eat my words!

  • @ WP man - 2010-06-13 10:57

Stem saam. Tans is daar baie beter vleul opsies as Habana. Hoop hy kom reg.

  • Emile @ Roar! - 2010-06-13 10:59

I assume "Roar!" means you are a LION. Well, no LION can tackle either, at least Aplon can score. I get your point though and yes, that is a problem.

  • Emile @ Tempest - 2010-06-13 11:05

Please!!!! Just get over your emotional baggage. It's Bok rugby now. I enjoy Aplon, but to be quite frank - Habana is a problem. I'm not saying they must select Shadow, but currently there are much better wings than Habana. His rugby went downhill this season. With regards to Hougaard - I think you should wait a bit with you comments. He is in great form and I would love to see him at scrumhalf once Du Preez has retired. I think he is going to be awesome!!! You should learn not to bad mouth player or supporters. It is much easier and pleasing to praise/congratulate/support them. I hate all people bad mouthing players - except Sir Earl Rose.

  • Emile @ Selma - 2010-06-13 11:10

WOW!. En dit alles van 'n vrou. Goeie opsomming. Hoop 'n Balsak of twee leer iets by jou of kry ten minste skaam as hulle sien 'n vrou weet soveel meer van hul geliefde spel.

  • Emile @ Eric - 2010-06-13 11:12

    So true!!!

  • ACEE - 2010-06-13 11:23

@Roar! WHICH GAME DID YOU WATCH ????????????

  • crozzie - 2010-06-13 12:06

Smit needs to lose some weight and pick up some fitness as it was clearly evident that he is struggling. Front row still not 100%--- give Werner Kruger a run againsr Italy. Well done Gio, remember Grant Batty of NZ. Francois and Dewald were excellent ,a ball forager is necessary, what is going to happen to Juan and Brussow? Not convinced about Zane ,our best 15 is Steyn even though the coach has a problem with him--- he is a gamebreaker.Well done Ricky.wt loss has helped---show Smit how to do it.Long term Houggard has to be 9 when Fourie goes.Olivier was quiet and must be careful. Pienaar has improved every wk at 10 so keep him as backup for Morne. Danie and Victor, with Bakkies and Bekker as our locks for the world cup.Remember ,have to rest the main players for next 2 tests

  • Gnambeni - 2010-06-13 15:21

Guys can anyone believe that the French media up to now (nearly 24hrs) after the boks humiliated the French, here in France nor mention of the game? All TV channels from last night up to now they didn’t say anything its like the game never took place. I was moving around the city this morning and nor where you could see the French flag not for the soccer team or the rugby team. I went passed a three story flat, where I saw 3 flags, on the 1st Portuguese flag, on the 2nd French flag and on the 3rd Algerian flag. So I guess in the building there are 3 different families and maybe they are up to the pride of their countries. I guess the soon the French family saw the two neighbours raising their flags he just feel shame and jealousy not show something on his window. On the Friday night the French TV (TF1) showed many fans all over the cities were parking in many parks and bars getting ready to watch the French team taking up Uruguay, you had expect to heard a laud noise on the streets after the game as its tradition here but sadly that night they all went silent and since then.

  • Joe - 2010-06-13 18:20

Was @ the game throughly enjoyd it... A few comments Kirchner is a journeyman full back. he did most things right but nothing brilliant except for the kick over the top from Ricky, if he had taken it woulld have been a great score. Flo, Aplon, Fourie were abolutely sublime. Ricky faded in the 2nd half but had a good game... gametime. Still believe Vermeulen is a better bet @ 8 than spies.. Spies fell off tackles and was stopped short of the gainline often. Olivier was poor. Failed to make 3 tackle in the first few minutes and in the 2nd half.. He has had enough opportunity ad failed at this level. Chilli had a good 2nd half.. one vital turnover and hit the rucks well... For the fullback of the future is the Shark Lambie. Will be watching him tonite!!

  • @Gnambeni - 2010-06-13 18:30

    Nice story there.

  • Lee - 2010-06-13 19:52

Nice constructive, objective observations @Joe. I agree that Wynand Olivier has been given opportunity at national level & is wasting. He is trying to hard to prove himself, instead of accepting he is not currently the best choice at national level. The same goes for his supporters. Be Bok supporters first, for a change... As for fullback...Coach Peter de Villiers seems to go with safety & stability, not game-breaking ability & unpredictability. This is paying off, until a candidate can fulfil that role & be a game-breaker. Our current candidates are not very consistant. Some players & supporters must be getting very uncomfortable that de Villiers is sticking to his guns & ignoring the ignorant. Shame!!! Well done Boks!!!

  • sonny - 2010-06-13 23:24

Lets giv Pdiv his due, people always criticise him when team doesn't do well , but only compliment players when team does well. Bokke has never been in such great shape recently, and the coach has to take a lot of credit for that

  • Hugo - 2010-06-13 23:51

Nobody likes being wrong, but... Januarie once again stepped up to the plate to prove that he brings his A-game only for the Boks (and leaves drinking and eating for the Stormers' account!). Aplon had a good game but I still believe in taking a good big one over a good small one. Kirshner and Wynand Olivier proved yet again that they are good Provincial and Super 14 players, but the international game is just bridge too far. In a tighter game their mistakes and one dimensional play is going to cost the Boks.

  • @Joe - 2010-06-14 01:51

Talk about one eye'd. Wish people would stop this crap about Olivier, he was awesome on saturday and had it not been for Ricky's slow service would of made more openings then he did. Pitty Fourie dropped the ball when olivier had created the try. As for Aplon, still not conviced, since he bounced off the French winger who is also a small man have to worry about the bigger NZ and AUS guys. Anyone who thinks Spies isn't the best 8th man in the world should rather just go watch the soccer. Juan was poor when he came on compared to WO, he needs to learn to tackle his man dead or backwards, always lets him gain a few meters.

  • Pickle - 2010-06-14 05:02

Zane K dependable but believe that this was a great time to have blooded young Lambie - despite our GREAT defense on the night I ebelieve that Lambie would have been on the spot there. All round a game to be proud of - but we seem to be sticking to maximum sfety - let's practice getting the backs the ball a bit more .

  • AJ - 2010-06-14 05:23

Aplon and Januaryi'e stock went up (not that means they are starting 15 by any stretch). Gio was devastating though. Wynand and Kirchner's stock went down, Other than that a great match, well dont Bokke!

  • Dronkie - 2010-06-14 07:12

  • StuartW - 2010-06-14 07:21

@Roar!...what game did you watch mate? Or maybe you had a bit too much to drink....Gio tackled them all....how about that first try of his, just put a shoulder into the big no 12, went straight through him......something Wynand could not do the whole game....Ricky did not play that bad, but he is not our no. 1,2 ,3 or even no. 4 scrummie...just too slow, sorry....Zane should be replaced by Pat Lambie...Great hands by Guthro...brilliant performance by all the Boks....

  • Monna - 2010-06-14 09:10

I used to think that Chilliboy was not a Bok. The boy proved me wrong. very very wrong. He stole a few balls and won some turnovers. His lineout feeding was awesome. Let's support the guys. That's all that they need from us as their fellow countrymen. Zane should note that there are some players better than him at Fullback. I have to agree with some of the guys on here, Pat Lambie is coming soon!
