Bloemfontein – All Black front-ranker Carl Hayman apparently advised French rugby club Toulon to sign up Springbok lock Bakkies Botha.
Botha is one of a number of Springboks that may look to pursue their careers elsewhere after the World Cup in New Zealand in 2011.
Scrumhalf Fourie du Preez was the first to announce that he will continue his career in Japan.
Sport24 also knows of at least another six Springboks that are seriously considering playing their rugby in Ireland or for Melbourne’s new Super rugby team.
This comes on top of the recent news that Springbok lock Johann Muller will be joining pop BJ Botha at Ulster.
Springbok lock Victor Matfield was apparently sounded out recently by Waratahs officials about possibly joining their coaching staff in 2012.
Matfield, 32, told the Herald that he would strongly consider “coaching overseas” in the future.
The same newspaper reported that former Springbok coach Jake White had the inside track to coach the Waratahs or Western Force in the near future. It is believed that current Western Force coach John Mitchell is in negotiations with a South African team.
Hayman, who was recently signed by Toulon after teams such as the Bulls and Lions were interested in his services, believes Botha is the best No 4 lock in world rugby and will be a major asset to the French team.
Botha has already been on an exploratory visit of France to visit Toulon president Mourad Boudjellal.
It was then put to Botha that Toulon have set a goal of soon becoming French and European champions.
Former Springbok flanker Joe van Niekerk took Botha on a sight-seeing trip on his French visit. Botha has not yet signed a contract and was “only in France on a fact-finding mission”.
While he is considering the move, he wants to take his family there first to get their approval.
