Bakkies’ fine debut dummy

Cape Town - Now overseas-based former Springbok lock enforcer Bakkies Botha is not normally renowned for finesse.

But the 33-year-old Loftus legend reportedly produced a welcome pinch of it for Toulon in the Heineken Cup on Sunday.

The UK-based Daily Telegraph reported on Monday, following the French side’s comfortable 37-16 weekend triumph over Mediterranean derby rivals Montpellier: “Toulon stretched their lead when (former England fullback Delon) Armitage broke from defence and wing Vincent Martin unleashed Bakkies Botha ... who galloped away for a try on his debut in the competition, with an audacious dummy thrown in.”

Other reports drew attention to Botha’s performance, noting that he had a high tackle count and was a forceful lineout contributor.

But another South African playing in the match, Montpellier centre Paul Bosch, the former Maties and WP representative, might be said to have had a slightly less constructive impact on the fixture when he clashed heads with Toulon’s veteran English star
Jonny Wilkinson, forcing the flyhalf into treatment for a gash.
