Bakkies’ fine debut dummy

2012-10-15 15:24

Cape Town - Now overseas-based former Springbok lock enforcer Bakkies Botha is not normally renowned for finesse.

But the 33-year-old Loftus legend reportedly produced a welcome pinch of it for Toulon in the Heineken Cup on Sunday.

The UK-based Daily Telegraph reported on Monday, following the French side’s comfortable 37-16 weekend triumph over Mediterranean derby rivals Montpellier: “Toulon stretched their lead when (former England fullback Delon) Armitage broke from defence and wing Vincent Martin unleashed Bakkies Botha ... who galloped away for a try on his debut in the competition, with an audacious dummy thrown in.”

Other reports drew attention to Botha’s performance, noting that he had a high tackle count and was a forceful lineout contributor.

But another South African playing in the match, Montpellier centre Paul Bosch, the former Maties and WP representative, might be said to have had a slightly less constructive impact on the fixture when he clashed heads with Toulon’s veteran English star
Jonny Wilkinson, forcing the flyhalf into treatment for a gash.

I do feel he has a space in the bok side. He has 50 mins of rugby in him. We need some tough locks. Kiwis have locks that have won world cups at 37 years of age.

      macziekpk - 2012-10-15 15:53

He plays full games in France. He is what we call in the industry, the man

      vermeulenwa - 2012-10-15 15:57

This can't be true, because Bakkies Botha doesn't dummy his opponents...when Bakkies has the ball, the opponents dummy themselves!

  • BlouMasjien1 - 2012-10-15 15:34

    What a legend !

  • jaco.groenewald.731 - 2012-10-15 15:36

    Bakkies will always be KING!!!

      chrisin.oz.1 - 2012-10-16 01:38

Yes, I see in the photo he is now also wearing the black and red colours like Watson's Kings.

  • david.s.duncan.1 - 2012-10-15 15:40

There are a few 'old' Springboks who are perhaps not as old as we think they are. Our pack could use some experience and Bakkies seems to be making a good time of it in France. He is already up there, why not use him for the EOYT.

      jaco.groenewald.731 - 2012-10-15 15:57

Great Idea, and he is use to the conditions there!!!

      sean.brady.14224 - 2012-10-15 17:45

Drop Bekker for Bakkies, Etzebeth would learn a lot on the EOYT!!! Not sure it would be good for Etzebeth, but he would learn :-)

      chrisin.oz.1 - 2012-10-16 03:38

He threw a dummy in a second-rate competition and now suddenly everyone wants him back in the Bok team? He is over the hill. Leave him alone in his retirement.

  • blou.johnny - 2012-10-15 16:08

...Bakkies Botha... ...simply the best... ...just like man of the match Morne Steyn...

  • vdwjasper - 2012-10-15 16:15

He had a "high tackle count"... I'm sure nobody knows for certain what the author refers to.

      macziekpk - 2012-10-15 16:30

It's Bakkies so it should have said high headbutt count. What a headbutt legend. Us connoisseurs only watch rugby for the fights. Bakkies 4 life

      chrisin.oz.1 - 2012-10-16 02:48

I see maaksiek is finally starting to move away from his weak attempts at being serious. A name change is on the cards, I'd say.

  • zimbobwe.mugabe - 2012-10-15 16:21

Wait until he starts strangling and head butting opponents. He will be called all sorts of names by his worshippers!!!

      macziekpk - 2012-10-15 16:26

I worship him and he more headbutting and the more strangling, the more I worship him.

      jaco.groenewald.731 - 2012-10-15 16:45

Aplon has never been the same since

      macziekpk - 2012-10-15 17:54

Just shows you what happens when a midget comes up against a giant

      macziekpk - 2012-10-15 22:23

I don't justify it or applaud it, I worship it. Besides when the vuilgat stormer etsebeth does it

  • peter.neethling.7 - 2012-10-15 16:48

I think the surprise here is that he did not just crash into someone and go to ground like he would have done if he were still playing in SA. One day we will learn that a side-step or off-load can be used instead of just trying to brute force your way over the opposition.

      jaco.groenewald.731 - 2012-10-15 16:54

Sé dit vir Beric Barnes, youtube dit tjom!!!

      chrisin.oz.1 - 2012-10-16 00:45

peter.neethling. When you stop being coached by Heineken and stop playing for the Bulls, real rugby skills will eventually rub off on you.

      chrisin.oz.1 - 2012-10-16 07:41

Ag ou hendrik, daai argument is al so ou nuus. Elke tweede Bull supporter het al daai lyn try gooi tot hulle besef het daar is net stof in die trofee kas op Moftus. Jy is bietjie agter die res van die wereld.

  • francois.v.eeden.3 - 2012-10-15 20:38

the games i saw him play for toulon he was very good and i feel he still has a lot to offer...we need the experience...we have great youngsters but I feel we need the experience. The last game as an perfect example. On the other hand, he's in the twilight of his career and making good money in Toulon...will he give that up now? Don't think so...

  • chrisin.oz.1 - 2012-10-16 00:43

Did Bakkies have a high tackle count? Or a high-tackle count?

  • chrisin.oz.1 - 2012-10-16 05:35

Now there's two words that you can use together in a sentence anytime: "Bakkies" and "dummy"

  • deon.delange.94 - 2012-10-16 08:45

My Toulon friends here in Paris were so chuffed that Bakkies was joining their team. And boy has he proved them right on debut... Well done, Bakkies. Proud to be a Bok supporter in France.
