Bakkies back on Toulon radar

2010-03-28 21:02

JJ Harmse

Pretoria – Bakkies Botha is again on the radar of French rugby club Toulon.

Reports from France state that Botha was on Sunday spotted in the south of the country where he apparently met Toulon president Mourad Boudjellal about a possible contract.

Rumour has it that Botha will be joining the club after the World Cup in New Zealand in 2011.

He also tried to leave the Bulls in 2008 to join Toulon, but the labour court found that his contract with the Bulls could not be broken.

The lock is recovering from an injury and is expected to be back in action for the Bulls by the end of April.

Botha’s Springbok team-mate Fourie du Preez has already indicated that he will be playing overseas after 2011. Du Preez will play for Japanese club Suntory Sungoliath.

well he is a "massive" player to have in any rugby team!.....and will be a huge loss to the bulls......but with flip van der merwe and Kruger(best lock in europe at the mo!) coming back, the bulls shouldn't have a problem. personally i think matfield and maybe rossouw might retire after after the 2011 WC, but their desire and committment to the bulls can never be questioned!!!......will be funny if the bulls end up with Hess and Mabeta as their first choice combo! :):):)

  • torro azur - 2010-03-28 21:37

"ou groote" has lost his heart for the game and has developed a lust for money. let him go, he made is mark, but young flip is a star that might dull "ou groote's" shine. we'll remember him but won't miss him.............. that much..........the nature of the game. matfield, we'll miss a captain with a tested IQ of over 130. not many of those around.................. i

  • Nou ok Bulle? - 2010-03-28 22:59

  • Dagvaar Bulle dagvaar! - 2010-03-28 23:02

Bakkies thanks for all the good times and if you do go after the world cup enjoy the experience and get as much money as you can, you deserve it.The Bulls have a great programme and no one man is irreplaceable but they will all be missed. Wow, what a team we have and have had over the last few years. Been awesome to watch and I have faith it willl remain so for some time to come.

Bakkies did wonderful things ,but it's time for him to go. And one of the reasons for his desire to go, as because snorre de villiers can no longer keep Andries Bekker out of the Springbok side. Andries is currently the BEST number 5 LOCK in the WORLD. Victor has done well over the years, but Andries is now the man. Bakkies thank you, for what you have done for the springboks and the COUNTREE, but please GO. In any case I HATE the Blue Bulls, so it does'nt matter to me, whether you are going or staying!! WP and STORMERS FOREVER!!!!!

  • @ torro azur - 2010-03-29 07:05

I don't think he has lost any heart, but as they say: "There is a time to come and a time to go" for everyone. His contributions over the years have been massive, same goes for Fourie du Preez and Matfield. Unlike the Sharks for instance, the Bulls Union has a proper development structure and unlike the Lions - the Bulls management can at least draft a proper player contract. Bottom line is that, as bulawayo-based-bok said, provision has been made for the future. I just love the "professional" way the Bulls Union conduct themselves. Knowing Fourie will leave after 2011, they are already looking at a new young talent (Mapoe). They will hopefulle buy him (at market value and not for the tip he's being paid at the Cheetahs), develop him into a real quality player on wing when they move Houraard to scrumhalf. Unlike other unethical assholes, they won't suddenly wake-up and go stealing other provinces top players via loopholes in their player contracts. Personally I think that's the main difference between the Bulls and some other provinces - we all know who they are, so I don't have to mention them. You earn and develop trust or commitment from players - you can't buy it.

Just because Bakkies wants to make money does not mean he has lost the heart of the game. Bakkies does not interfer with your work choice so dont talk about his. Bakkies is one of the greats in rugby - he has been over played to a point of serous injury. Most of our administrators have not played top rugby so dont know how they are damaging the players in S14 to Boks. Now Bakkies needs to ensure he has cash for his life after rugby and family and to look after his health even though the Bok management dont. Bakkies can play for Toulon for huge cash and with less games.

There is, after all, a world outside Pretoria!!! Bakkies' I.Q. shows it! Hope the Bull's supportes understand it!!!

  • Sad, but well deserved - 2010-03-29 07:11

Loosing world class players to the Euro is always sad, but that is life. At the end of their carreers they deserve the opportunity to go and earn a nice lump sum. Nobody can ever doubt Botha's, Matfield's or Du Preez's commitment to SA rugby or the Bulls. The Bulls Union is one of those rare unions where you don't find many of those club/province hopping players. It is therefore always sad to see committed players leaving. I can just imagine what their market value must be overseas - they have earned it.

  • kevan - 2010-03-29 08:07

Sad, but well deserved. Get your facts straight. Habana, Pretorius Gary Botha , van der westhuizen etc.

  • Johan - 2010-03-29 09:18

  • My bloed is blou! - 2010-03-29 09:32

If Bakkies wants to go... then let him go! He is nothing more than a walking injury anyway. The Blue Bull juggernaut will roll along without this dirty, disloyal thug. Ask Habana, the Bulls are bigger than any individual. Matfield must also pack his bags for Aussie sooner rather than later. The Bulls supporters do not want players who do not want us. My bloed BLY blou!

  • Brakkies - 2010-03-29 10:15

The day I would like to call JUDGEMENT day. I HATE the BLUE COWS!!!

  • @Brakkies - 2010-03-29 11:55

Dit is hoekom julle bul ondersteuners die grootste klomp kermgatte and galbraakers is.

  • Gommie - 2010-03-29 12:01

I am a avid Bulls supporter and I can honestly say the following list of players will not continue playing after 2010 1. Victor Matfield – he will retire and with his lineout skills end up coaching someone 2. Bakkies Botha - he will be 31/32 and will have to get one or wto years out of his bosgy, why not make some money while he is at it 3. Danie Rossouw – his age is also against him and I think he will also opt for money after the RWC 4. Pedrie Wannenberg – He will be 30 and money contract will be ideal 5. Fourie du preez – Already said he is on his way 6. Guthro Steenkamp - He will be 30 and money contract will be ideal 7. Jaco Pretorius – Will ten to one retire 8. Wynand Olivier – He must be fed up of never making the bok team, he will probably be a bit player again at the 2011 RWC and move on 9. Heini Adams – His age will be a problem No ons can argue this fact and for what they have done for us, boys go and make all the money you can

  • iain - 2010-03-29 12:33

@My bloed is blou! - you such an idiot.. if you were offered a million pounds to work overseas you'd say no? why should it be different for him? once he's to old to play are you going to pay him and he's family to live? you won't even give him a second thought after he's no good to you as a player and you want his loyalty? like i said.. you are a royal idiot.. good luck to him.. he deserves it.

  • die yster - 2010-03-29 12:37

so, the bulls have two years to build their new set of players. If i was coatch, i will include young promissing players into prcatice now, today and encorage some cross polynation of skills before its lost.

  • die yster - 2010-03-29 12:47

PS. lets face it, the bulls have a winning camp at the momnent. It is imperitive that during this and the next year this mentallity is carried over to the "new" younger squad. I believe very little are being done in terms of a sound and feasible study on what contributes to the bulls success interms of practices, resources and fascilities currently used. Although world class players, the team can easily fall back to a loosing streak. But something just gels and experts need to id this and inherently position this X-factor strategically into our rugby fundementals. I personally believe we have obtained "something" and this something was what the neiuzeelander had previously.

  • The Godfather - 2010-03-29 17:29

They asked if there would be life after Habana, and young van der Heever stepped up. When Jaco Pretorius got injured, Stephan Dippenaar filled his shoes with merit. When Bakkies and Danie got injured, Flip vd Merwe stepped up. Conclusion: Have a safe trip Bakkies....

  • bluebear - 2010-03-29 20:14

i was born a bull supporter, and i will die one ,i am ashamed to say that some of these comments make me cringe.why cant we be glad that there is a spark in province again, surely it will benefit SA rugby.u don't need to break down any one just to build yourself up.to the players leaving the bulls i say thank you for the hard work and making us believe in bulls rugby again, people tend to forget that we were at the bottom of the pile a couple of years back, and couldn't steal a win.every team goes through dips in performance some of them just take longer to climb out of.i am happy that province is coming back to glory,it will be brilliant for SA rugby ,don't break down, rather build up!

  • Leon - 2010-03-29 22:16

Bon Voyage Bakkies. Bon Voyage. Please just stay for the world cup. I believe the NZ's are sh!t scared of you. Go give them hell first.
