Baby Black cleared of rape

2012-09-28 10:09

Cape Town - South African police have decided not to prosecute Baby Blacks hooker Nathan Harris over a rape allegation made against him.

According to stuff.co.nz website, a 22-year-old woman filed a complaint against the Under 20 New Zealand rugby player in June, alleging he had raped her just hours after his team lost the junior world championship final to South Africa.

But police there have advised the New Zealand Rugby Union and Harris that after investigating the complaint, they will not be prosecuting.

Harris said in a statement that he was relieved to have his name cleared.

‘‘The past three months has been an incredibly difficult time for me and my family and now I want to put this matter behind me.

‘‘I want to thank my family, friends and rugby community for supporting me during this time.’’

But he was disappointed that his special experience with the team was marred by the allegation.

‘‘My focus is now on getting on with playing rugby and I'll be working hard to prove that I can be a good asset for any team I am lucky enough to be involved in," he said.

NZRU professional rugby general manager Neil Sorensen said the union was pleased that the South African authorities had now closed the matter.

‘‘Nathan has already publicly acknowledged that he breached team rules when he allowed a woman to come back to his room after the Final of the Junior World Cup in South Africa in June.’’

It was considered misconduct and a breach in the team rules, and it would be recorded as a warning on Harris’ file.

‘‘We now consider the chapter closed.’’Harris and his family asked for continued privacy and would not be making any further public comment.

@moari, he did it for sure.

      @Jimmy - was it sore?

      nicholas.graan - 2012-09-28 11:04

As is usually the case, the sportsman's name is rubbished and splashed all over the media and the accuser remains safely anonymous.

He should keep it in his pants! Let this be a warning to all touring young rugby players. When Daddy finds out the girl may just scream rape.

News 24 are a bunch of Racists.. "Baby Black cleared of rape"...

And the girl that accused him gets off scott free??? Does she know what would have happened to that man in an SA jail if he was convicted? Women that cry wolf about such a serious matter deserve to be locked up.

      miguel75 - 2012-09-28 10:34

How do you know she cried wolf. Plenty of rape cases in this country suffer this same fate. Either the police or prosecutors dont investigate properly and the guy gets off scott free. I am not saying that Nathan did anything but just because the police have decided not to take this matter further does not mean the guy is innocent. Dont bash either side without knowing the facts.

If you cry rape and it has not taken place, you should get the same punishment as a person who is found guilty of a rape crime.

  • Sonnyjakes - 2012-09-28 10:37

Had a feeling from beginning that this was a groupie crying wolf.

  • christopher.m.lowe - 2012-09-28 10:48

The silly slut who went back to his room in the early hours of the morning, and then made up a story about rape, should be identified and charged with perverting the course of justice.

      nzbro.allblack - 2012-09-28 11:45

agree. her allegation obviously had no truth to it at all hence the SA Police final response and she has tarnished the future and reputation of an innocent man. Name & shame her I say.

      miguel75 - 2012-09-28 11:52

Do you definately know that she wasn't raped? You are 100% sure that she is a "slut"...WOW, all by reading this article that says nothing more than "police will not be prosecuting", doesn't mean that he is innocent (or guilty), but please dont jump to conclusions about the girl or what she went through from one article on News 24. I am not saying he is guilty, but at least I am not jumping to conclusions about either of them...

Have they cleared him based on evidence that he didn't do it or lack of evidence that he did? I wonder.

      nzbro.allblack - 2012-09-28 22:00

any lawyer/judge from any country will tell you that in any criminal incident if there is no "evidence" then it did not happen. there is no case to answer for. I dont think your police would do anybody any favours by overlooking something this serious if there was evidence to take it further.

I am no racist, but when I saw black, I just presume he was guilty
