Wellington - France produced an outstanding defensive effort to beat New Zealand 27-22 in a test match in Dunedin on Saturday.

Maxime Medard scored a late intercept try for France after Francois Trinh-Duc and William Servat had crossed the line for the visitors in the first half. Debutant scrumhalf Julien Dupuy kicked three conversions and two penalties.

Stephen Donald slotted four penalties for the All Blacks with Liam Messam and Ma'a Nonu getting the tries for the home side at Carisbrook.

The second test is in Wellington on June 20.
