ABs to try different skipper

2012-10-30 20:20

Cape Town - All Black coach Steve Hansen has indicated he will blood a new captain on their four-match end-of-year tour to Europe.

Regular skipper Richie McCaw will lead the team in the tour opener against Scotland next weekend but will be rested for their following fixture against Italy.

"Kieran Read or Dan Carter are probably the two leading candidates, depending on what the final selections are," Hansen told the Rugby365 website.

"It will give someone the chance to take over the leadership."

McCaw hasn't missed a Test since he was rested for the final World Cup pool match against Canada on October 2 last year. He is expected to be back for their last two games against Wales and England.

McCaw will also sit out next year's Super Rugby competition as he tries to prolong his international career.

And we cling to our captains until they are ready for the retirement home.

So do the AB's, only time he is not is when he is injured or rested.

      Caleb - 2012-10-31 01:50

Nothing wrong with him, just time to blood someone else. An eye for the future.

Take note SA Rugby. If PDivvy did this, or even if Heineken started to do something like this early in the season, the Boks won't be in a position where Jean de Villiers is kept in the team just because he is the only leader. Heineken it is not too late to identify your new captain on this tour. Too bad you did not select him...... He will now have to watch the tour on TV drinking champagne out of his 2012 Currie Cup winner's mug.

They have so much depth in their team, they can afford to rest the Captain - no wonder they are the best in the world.

On top of that he is no Cheat.Way to go Hansen. Hopefully Read will re-establish the trust of the rugby world in NZ rugby...
