“I am thrilled to be coming back to South Africa particularly during the World’s Most Beautiful Marathon, the Two Oceans Marathon. Though I will not be running, I look forward to meeting the South African running community and cheering them on” said Gebrselassie.
Haile’s journey took a different shape when he acquired his first pair of handed down running shoes in 1989. They just so happened to be adidas. It was the unexpected beginning of a long and very special relationship. Gebrselassie signed with adidas in 1992 and also cemented his position as a prodigious distance runner.
Since then Gebrselassie has gone on to achieve unprecedented success. With two Olympic gold medals over 10 000 metres, four World Championship titles in the same event, four consecutive wins of the Berlin Marathon and three straight wins at the Dubai Marathon, his performance is unmatched. Haile also won numerous other major competitions wins at distances between 1 500 metres and the marathon, moving from outdoor, indoor and cross country running to road running as well as breaking the 61 Ethiopian national records. In total Haile has 27 world records.
“adidas is committed to continually raising the bar and infusing excitement to local runners”, commented Gugu Ntuli, PR manager at adidas South Africa.
“We are therefore very proud to bring out the greatest marathon runner of all time to South Africa for the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon, because nothing says running like Haile.”.
Haile will be in Cape Town from April 1-4, 2015
