Trickett back in the pool

Sydney - Triple Olympic gold medallist Libby Trickett will make her return to competitive swimming at the Australian Short Course Championships in Adelaide next month, Swimming Australia said on Friday.

Trickett, 26, retired from the sport in December 2009 but announced her return to competitive swimming last September.

She has had to wait nine months because of international drug-testing protocols before being eligible to compete again at a FINA-recognised meet.

It has been almost two years since Trickett last raced competitively, when she set a world record of 51.01sec in the 100m freestyle at the 2009 Australian Short Course Championships in Hobart.

"It has been a long wait, over nine months now, but in some ways it feels like yesterday that I made the decision to get back in the pool again," Trickett said in a statement.

"I started my taper yesterday, which is pretty exciting because it means there is a good block of training to taper and that’s something I haven’t had for about two years."

Trickett will swim in five events over the three days of competition from July 1-3, the 50m backstroke, butterfly and freestyle and 100m freestyle and butterfly.

In the lead-up to the meet on June 29, Trickett will also compete in a 100m freestyle time trial for a place in Australia’s 4x100m freestyle team for the July 24-31 Shanghai world championships.

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
