Johannesburg - Three-time Olympian Darian Townsend, South Africa’s lone swimmer at the Moscow leg of the 2012 FINA World Cup, won two medals on the first day on Wednesday.

Townsend opened his account with a silver medal in the men’s 100m after he led the sprint event through the first two laps.

Australia's Tommaso D'Orsogna, however, finished strongly by touching first in a time of 47.11 seconds.

Townsend and the United States’ Anthony Ervin hit the wall in the same time of 47.43, sharing second place.

In the men’s 100m individual medley final, Townsend came up against series-leading swimmer Kenneth To of Australia, who won the race in 51.66.

Townsend had a good start but lost distance on To and Trinidad and Tobago’s George Bovell in the breaststroke leg.

Bovell finished second in 51.81, with the South African taking third place in 53.19.

South Africa’s two Olympic champions, Cameron van der Burgh and Chad le Clos, missed the event while preparing for the World Short Course Championships in Istanbul, Turkey, in December.
