Gap - Tour de France organisers said they were "in mourning" after learning of the death of a technician, Patrick Guay, who was found dead on Tuesday morning.

According to a statement by organisers Guay, 59, who was working on his 27th Tour de France, was found dead next to his camping car next to the finish line of Tuesday's 16th stage in Gap.

The statement said: "The Tour de France cycling family is in mourning.

"Patrick Guay, who was working at his 27th Tour de France... was found dead next to his camping car close to the finish line in Gap early this morning.

"An investigation has been launched by the relevant authorities to determine the circumstances of his death."

Organisers said Guay, a former rider in the 1970s, was the uncle of Quick Step rider Jerome Pineau, who is currently competing at the Tour.

Organisers added: "The Tour de France would like to extend their sincere condolences to Jerome, to his family and to the colleagues of Patrick."
