Garrin LambleyCape Town - The war of words between current Tour de France champion Alberto Contador and seven-time winner Lance Armstrong refuses to die down.
Contador, who won his second Tour on Sunday, was reported in the Spanish press as saying his relationship with Armstrong "is non-existent" and "even if he is a great champion, I have never had admiration for him and I never will".
Armstrong was quick to hit back at his Astana team-mate on his Twitter page with several tweets, including:
Seeing these comments from AC. If I were him I'd drop this drivel and start thanking his team. w/o them, he doesn't win.Armstrong, who has confirmed his departure from the Kazakhstan-funded Astana team and will try his luck at next year's race with his new RadioShack outfit, went on to say:
hey pistolero, there is no "i" in "team". what did i say in March? Lots to learn. Restated.'Pistolero' in reference to Contador's habit of firing his fingers in the shape of a pistol when crossing the finish line as a stage victor.
Armstrong's final message on the matter was in response to a tweet from fellow cyclist Axel Merckx, son of Tour de France legend Eddy - and a close friend of Armstrong - A champion is also measured on how much he respect his team-mates and opponents.
You can win a race on your own not a grand tour.Over to you Alberto. One thing is for sure, the 2010 edition of the Tour de France promises to be memorable.
