Cape Town - South Africa's sole representative in the 2010 Tour de France, Robbie Hunter, has been forced to abandon the race ahead of Stage 11.
Hunter, riding for the Garmin-Transitions team, crashed at the start on Stage 10 on Wednesday, but battle on manfully to the end.
However, post-stage X-rays revealed Hunter had sustained a small fracture to the head of the radial bone in the elbow area.
Writing on his social networking Twitter site, Hunter revealed: So that's it TDF over! Tried to ride to sign on but no chance to even hold the bar let alone use the brakes...
Heading into Thursday's Stage 11 over 184.5km fromn Sisteron to Bourg les Valence, Hunter was in 129th position overall, some 1h24:42 behind leader Andy Schleck.
Hunter's best finish in this year's race was fifth position in the sprint finish to end Stage 4.
