Dallas - Antonio Margarito underwent successful right orbital bone surgery at Methodist Hospital on Tuesday, three days after taking a punishing beating at the hands of Filipino boxing star Manny Pacquiao.
Margarito was kept overnight at the hospital before a Wednesday release. He plans to take a flight to Los Angeles and then return to his home in Tijuana, Mexico, after losing in the World Boxing Council super welterweight title bout.
Pacquiao won a unanimous 12-round decision over Margarito on Saturday in nearby Arlington, punishing his larger rival so badly that surgery to repair the bone around his eye had to be delayed so facial swelling could ease.
"The doctor told us everything went perfect - no complications of any kind," said Margarito manager Sergio Diaz. "There's nothing wrong with his right eye."
Diaz said Margarito will have two months without contact of any kind in a gym to allow the fighter to heal.
"Antonio is such a warrior. The first thing he asked was 'When can I start running?' and we told him he has to relax for awhile," Diaz said. "For sure, at least 60 days of no contact of any kind in a gym."
