Cape Town - Blue Bulls’ dead-eye-dick flyhalf, Morné Steyn, with a record four drop goals in the Super 14 semi-final against the then defending champions The Crusaders, will live long in the memory banks. Steyn’s heroics set the men from Pretoria up for a Super 14 final in which they grilled the Chiefs to lift their second Super 14 title. Steyn, with 44.1% of the 5637 votes from Sport24 readers, pipped Springbok Sevens coach Paul Treu (who garnered 26.1% of the votes), the man who masterminded South Africa’s joyous charge to the first time mantle of World Sevens Series champions, to win the May Sport24 Performance of the Month Award.
In the much less serious, and hopefully something we can all laugh about, Plonker of the Month category, it was a not-so-merry month of May for The Sharks Super 14 unit, who inexplicably got worse and worse when they ought to have been getting better and better in the tournament … and on home soil, too. They had done the hard yards overseas and seemed a shoe-in for a home semi, but truly screwed it all up in the run-in, not even getting into the last four in the end. With 32.3% of the 5637 votes, they pipped their very own scrumhalf Rory Kockott (who suffered 24% of the votes) to the May Sport24 Plonker of the Month Award.
Both Steyn and The Sharks now go into the pot of monthly winners, and now stand a one in twelve chance of winning the annual Sport24 Award, again decided by reader vote at the end of the year.
The June nominations are now up, with Morne Steyn again in the mix for his performance against the Lions.
