Cape Town - Here it is … in the first of our three awards for last year - the image voted by Sport24's readers as the most awesome of 2008, after contemplation of each crackerjack, monthly winning photograph.
“Dunk diver” was the striking October selection during the 2008 calendar year, featuring a member of the Milwaukee Bucks “Rim Rockers” getting massively airborne for a slam-dunk – and it’s won the annual award by a near-landslide.
It hauled in 32.7 percent of your votes, just over 20 percent more than for any of the other 11 pictures.
The image was shot by AFP’s Frederic J Brown, a 45-year-old American who was born in Hong Kong.
He attended both high school and university in San Francisco, where he also launched his career in photo-journalism in the early 1980s. He joined AFP in 1997.
This is how he described getting the shot that so wooed your votes: “I was using a Nikon D3 with a 24-70mm lens, 2500asa, 800/2.8.
“I’d seen these guys before so I knew what to expect, and luckily this time they happened to come in my direction as I photographed the ‘Rim Rocker’ doing a 360-degree flip off a springboard to slam-dunk into the basket.”
