Johannesburg - TLB Boxing Promotions, formed by former world champions Dingaan Thobela, Lehlohonolo Ledwaba and Jan Bergman, is more than ready to kick-start its future.

TLB will stage its first boxing tournament at Carousel Resort in Hammanskraal on December 8.

The main attraction will be the national super lightweight title fight between champion Xolani Mcotheli and Michael Mokoena.

Mcotheli is from Mdantsane in the Eastern Cape, while Mokoena is based in Gauteng.

Knocked out

TLB Boxing Promotions was officially launched at Time Square in Menlyn, Pretoria, after the consortium struck a partnership deal with Sun International and Workerslife insurance to promote boxing in the country.

Mcotheli is a talented fighter who comes into the fight with a record of 15 wins and four defeats from 19 professional fights. He lost his biggest fight, for an intercontinental title, to Malcolm Klassen in 2015.

In a bout at the Orient Theatre in East London in April, he knocked out Khumbulani Mdletshe in the eighth round to win his current title.

Mokoena’s fight record reads 11 victories and one loss from 12 outings.

Ledwaba, who previously held the International Boxing Federation junior featherweight title, said: “We are looking forward to a great show that will formally usher us into the world of promoting. The boxers are talented and there is no doubt fans will enjoy a great event".

Promote world title bouts

Bergman, who previously held the World Boxing Union welterweight title, said TLB Boxing Promotions was looking forward to promoting at least six fights next year.

“We’ll get top boxers throughout the country who will fight at Carousel. Our ultimate goal is to go international and promote world title bouts,” he said.

TLB spokesperson Joyce Kungwane said: “What is important is that TLB will in future liaise with trainers from all provinces and promote their boxers".
