Cape Town - In what has been described as the best field in a decade, 14 superlative thoroughbreds will vie for the R1 million purse in South Africa’s most prestigious mile contest, The L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate, at Kenilworth Race-course, Cape Town, on January 11, 2014.
In addition, the day’s 12-race card has lured the highest level of equestrian excellence to participate in this, the 153rd running of The Queen’s Plate.
The day’s sole three-year old, the highly touted Western Winter colt Red Ray, will add dimension and interest as he duels his elder luminaries, including J&B Met ante post favourite, Jackson, together with distinguished milers like Whiteline Fever, Cape Town Noir and Royal Zulu Warrior.
Visiting Sansui Summer Cup victor, Yorker, meanwhile, will also be thrown into the formidable field along with Ice Machine, Jet Explorer, Chave de Oura, No Worries and King of Pain, culminating in what promises to be an unparalleled race-day spectacle.
“The final field of 2014’s The L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate sees an immensely powerful level of competition - which will make for an action-packed race day for punters and spectators alike,” says Jonathan Snaith , Owner of Snaith Racing.
The card offers patrons a Pick 6 carryover of R2 million, and an estimated grand pool of R4.5 million, with the day’s first race kicking off at 11:55 at Kenilworth Racecourse.
For the first time ever, The L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate will feature several internationally-acclaimed races; the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate Oak Tree Stakes and Paddock Stakes, the only South African races which allow their winners entry into the elite Breeders’ Cup; as well as England’s revered race, the Glorious Goodwood coming to Cape Town to run the Glorious Goodwood Peninsula Stakes Grade 2 on the day’s stellar card.
In August, The L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate Oak Tree Stakes Grade 3 will then travel to London to feature in the week of Glorious Goodwood.
