Canet-en-Roussillon - Distance swimmer Myles Brown has claimed double gold at the Canet-en-Roussillon leg of the Mare Nostrum Series on Wednesday.

On the first day of the two-day meet, in which only three South Africans appeared in the finals, Brown was first up in the men's 400m freestyle final where he claimed gold in a time of three minutes, 50.93 seconds.

He touched first ahead of Spain's Miguel Duran Navia, who posted a time of 3:51.91 with Filip Zaborowski of Poland claiming third in 3:51.98.

In the last event, Brown again stepped up to the plate, to win his second gold of the day in the 200m freestyle event, posting a time of 1:47.70.

Despite a strong challenge from Russia's Artem Lobuzov over the final lap, Brown kicked to touch first.

Lobuzov grabbed second place in a time of 1:48.71, while Jeremy Stravius of France finished in third place with 1:48.93.

Women's swimming ace Karin Prinsloo continued her stellar season in the pool as she was first to the wall in the 200m backstroke in a time of 2:10.84.

Iceland's Eyglo Osk Gustafsdottir finished behind her in 2:11.86 with Russia's Daria Ustinova bagging the bronze medal in 2:12.47.

She also made an appearance in the women's 200m final where she just missed out of a podium place as she touched in fourth place, clocking 1:57.85.

The only other South African to swim in a final was Darren Murray, who finished seventh in the men's 200m backstroke in 2:03.15.
