'Semenya could run again'

Caster Semenya (File)

Johannesburg - South Africa's sports minister said on Thursday he believes that world 800m champ Caster Semenya could compete again in women's athletics, after a storm over testing to determine her gender.

"In my view Caster Semenya's future is in her hands. She can decide to run as a girl, which she is," Makhenkesi Stofile said, according to reports.

The ministry said earlier in a statement that Semenya's lawyers, South Africa's government and the world athletics governing body IAAF had reached "total agreement" on her title won amid a storm over her gender at the Berlin championships in August.

The parties also agreed that scientific tests into her gender will be remain confidential, but their statement have no clear details on the runner's competitive future.

But the IAAF said Wednesday that gender testing was not yet complete for the athlete, a first year sports science student who grew up in a rural village in northern South Africa.

Her rapid speed gains this year prompted questions about the gender of the runner, who has a deep voice and a muscular physique.

Leaked test results said Semenya was a hermaphrodite, sparking anger from the South African public and government, who have rallied behind the athlete.

The IAAF has numerous options when it considers the results of her testing -- they could ban her from competing again, require that she undergo surgery, or take no action.

What a stupid, stupid little ANC man. Having got a "get out of jail free" card he now goes and plunges straight back into the quagmire again. It is clear to anyone with an iota of intelligence that Carter will not be allowed to compete on the international stage until her correct gender is sorted out - either a man or a woman. There is no way that the IAAF will allow her to compete as a "woman" with all that testosterone pumping through her body and if she tries to compete as a "man" she won't make the grade. So it's decision time for her whether she likes it or not. It is a classic case of not being able to have your cake and eat it.

i find the whole debate on the scientific definition or separation of men and women very interesting. and i wonder why this is not used in other more prestigious sports like soccer. i have never had of Maradona, Zidane, Pele all the greats going for such a thing just cause they can play and perform better than their pals. What the IAAF and their friends are doing is a very dangerous trend. do this people understand catastrophic potential of this "scientifically accepted discrimination". i say fotsek to this their stupid methods and may God bless us who accept His people as he makes them. The IAAF should go ahead and create a class of Non Male Non Female so that this people they tell us do not fit into our groups can also compete just like disabled people with different disabilities. if they can't have balls to do that they might as well keep quite and stop disgusting us. Do men get tested for this gender tests! did they test Bolt and the american swimming genius Phelps? that just goes to how women are treated like dirt worlover. Oh can you please open up so i can see if you are a woman!? what a shame! if no body corrects this animal behaviour by the IAAF our country must go all the way to ensure this immorality is STOPPED. We cannot continue to have our mothers and sisters to be embarrased by this scientific bodies like the stupid IAAF. there are many big girls out there that are more stronger than many of us and who can even moor the hell out of us, but guess what we treat them as women. only the IAAF would do gender tests on this our beatiful sisters. what a shame!

Perhaps time will tell, and perhaps the decision may be made for Caster, when other female athletes either decide not to compete with her because they feel she has an unfair advantage, or to compete with her because they consider her advantage fair and female. After all, isn't the whole reason that there are separate sporting events for males and females because males and females have different physical makeup?
Nigel11/20/2009 1:35 PM
The whole debate about Caster Semenya is besides the point. It has just finally raised a long avoided issue into the spotlight and asked for a definition...what makes a woman a women? I can see from the responses that most have not pondered the question for more than a moment, and no, female parts do not make you a woman. Nor do male parts prove otherwise. Sports governing bodies have not implemented hormone levels defined as acceptable, nor have they defined muscle makeup or the presence of hormones that destroy muscle. All of which play a massive role. Why is one man faster than another? His genetic make him that way, his muscle makeup, hormone levels, and general physiology make him a better athlete. Take that to an extreme, which all olympic athletes are, and we will find they are all genetic freaks according to you and I as a bisis for comparrison. There are too many opinions here based on nothing but OPINION, we need to define some tough things to define before people carry on making noise.
john smith11/20/2009 1:28 PM
Hi Caster, you will never run again in a developed country, maybe in the streets of Limpopo, but never ever for a relative cause again. Concentrate on your studies and please don't make us bow our heads in disgrace for being part of an un-intellectual society ever again.

Mkateko --- If you hate to bring race into this discussion, then why do you? Methinks you are discriminating against certain people because of their skin colour - that is called racism in case you hadn't realised it!

You people make me sick. What has this would come to, what happened to empathy. Yet again who am I kidding, this is SA we talking about, you people have no sense of humanity. Can’t you see that this woman has suffered enough? What happened to being compassionate to fellow human beings? Can you stop being rude and keep your ungodly opinions to your selves. I hate to bring race into this factor but yet again we cannot run from reality, if Semenya was white the response that she is getting from people would have been totally different.

Judge Dread11/20/2009 12:11 PM
Why is the African mind so warped. There sooo many idiots on here missing the point. YES she is a girl, looks like one naked and grew up as one fine point. BUT the issue at hand is that she has high levels of male testosterone in her system because of her hermaphrodite state which means she is WAY stronger than any other woman and therefore it is not fair that she competes against other woman athletes. Why is it for all you Africans so difficult to understand? Why always make it a race things. You are the biggest bunch of racists in the world. Its sooo frustrating having to deal with such ignorance every day in this country..

There are far more important things that the so clled powers to be in South Africa needs to sort out than continue with this girls fate. I think she should be left alone and ASA must sort their politics and them self out. That is why I stopped coaching the sport that I loved so much because of all the hipocrits and money suckers in ASA. Memenya I watched you win with a lump in my throat. You go Girl

BenH11/20/2009 11:33 AM
How can you allow a "man" to compete against woman, because for all practical reasons, she is the same as a man. Did anyone notice how far "he" has won the races. A normal woman will, if she win, win by much smaller margins. Any woman that has that kind of advantage over other women due to genetic abnormalities should accept that she cant compete normally. And this got nothing to do with racism, as all woman in that catagory got the same advantage. By not accepting this and make it known to the rest of the world is more cowardish, and in the long run will cause more harm to "herself" and our country.
Jonny Moloto11/20/2009 11:32 AM
People my stop being saying Caster is a man. Tests where conducted and they must remain private. why are private parts called private? because they are private! Reverant Stofile with all due respect you have failed in your stort portfolio. Randomely ask five peolpe you come across who the minister of storts is, almost one will know you. People must leave the girl from Limpopo to shine as a girl because she is a girl. Those who dont believe must go back to Biology Books and leave the lady. Jonny Moloto from Limpopo

Why don't they want to leave Caster's case alone??? It's easy, with her as a smokescreen, they can sidestep/prevent attention to themselves and their actions!! I'm not fooled.
Joe11/20/2009 11:03 AM
The IAAF should open three new categories to compete in, besides the old fashioned male - female. These should be 1. more than 30% male hormones; 2. those with more than 30% female hormones; 3. those with both hormones, 70% either way. Then we can argue whether it should be 30% or 40%.
Piet Pielietjies11/20/2009 10:56 AM
Of course she can compete again - against other hermaphrodites! Or against male athletes?

Riaan11/20/2009 10:19 AM
What you guys seem to misunderstand is that nobody is questioning if she is a women, she has been raised as a girl and therefor in her mind she is a girl. This is however not why the IAAF is testing her for, they are testing her to see if she is eligible to compete as a female athlete. The IAAF has through the years implemented guidelines and rules that ALL athletes has to comply with whether it is the use of steriods or in this case gender issues. For the South African politicians and some people on this blog to make it a race issue is unresponsible and quite frankly a scapegoate for the real issue at hand. I feel very sorry for Caster and the situation she has been placed in. @ Lopeza I am sure she is proudly South African like all the rest us.
Jenny11/20/2009 10:17 AM
Typical of our officials to go blabbing off their mouths, whilst the IAAF is keeping quiet until all the tests have been finalised and then they will make their official announcement. If things do not go our officials way, they will then blame the IAAF once again for leaking information, when all they ever do is keep quiet until they are in a position to make an announcement. All this talk and all from the SA side when the IAAF is acting professionaly and doing things the right way, not like our stupid big mouth officials! Blabbing their mouths off before the final test and announcement from the IAAF. What I have a good laugh about is SA asking the IAAF to apologise, for what, they have done nothing wrong and I am glad their announcement put our officials right in their places, they had nothing to apologise for as the IAAF have done nothing wrong!
Matt11/20/2009 10:14 AM
I dont understand the controversy. She is a human being, and as such has the right not to have the results of medical tests broadcast for the world to see! What business is it of mine, an average joe south african? Sure, other athletes have the right to a fair competition (whatever that means), but that right doesn't supersede the basic right to dignity..
Zarne11/20/2009 10:14 AM
Ja... Stofile, Caster will run again, IN YOUR FRINKIN DREAMS. You are an absolute disgrace to our Country with your stupid comments, and Caster is a CHEAT. CASTER does NOT deserve the medal, and she/he should do the honourable thing and hand the medal back, out of HIS/HER own free will. Good grief is this really happening, the frinkin cheek, to still call HIM/HER a "Champion". CASTER'S testosterone levels are too HIGH to be a woman, and if, like you all say "CASTER" is a woman, then "CASTER" should be disqualified for "doping". AAAGGGHHHHHHH. DISPICABLE!!
Sambok11/20/2009 10:02 AM

This backwards African mentality is really getting on my nerves... She's NOT a girl, so she can't compete against girls. Just because you call yourself something doesn't make it real. I can myself an elephant if I want, but I'm not going to magically grow a trunk and a tail and big grey ears... Catch a wake up, go back to school!
Made11/20/2009 9:35 AM
I reckon the minister should have started clear that this young, strong woman will never compete again, perhaps the minister wants to join the party of lairs led by the form SAA' s CEO.
Cameron11/20/2009 9:35 AM
and the minister of sport believes in Father Chrismas as well... oh, sorry, thats Fadda Kreesmist, he is also hermo.. whatever.. and just as stupid not to realize that the game is up and thats that. So who does she have to compete with when everyone else says they not?... oh wait, the old national sport can be revived.. play with yourself.. uhmm, she can't do that either?
Grumpy Taxpayer11/20/2009 9:32 AM
Caster Semenya he is a woman!
Mandi11/20/2009 9:30 AM
its not her fault that she is the way she is. i agree that she's missing other things that would make her a 'woman'. but would they allow her to run as a boy then?
Caster Didn't know11/20/2009 9:26 AM
Poor Caster was born a woman at least I assume that's what she knows...and did not know about the hermaphrodite thing...so ASA is to blame not Castrer...how many other women in the world know about the extend of the sexulity??? Sorry Caster may God bless you...
Mike11/20/2009 9:24 AM
It will be interesting to see him run against no-one: the women against who he would be competing will just withdraw, leaving only one entrant. Farce.
@Pat11/20/2009 9:20 AM
Shame! you have no idea do you! Caster Semenya is NOT a woman!!!
GINA11/20/2009 9:20 AM
The IAAF & ASA should give Caster a chance to choose her gender and then go forward with operation to make it all OK! It is not going to be right for her to run with excessive male hormones in her body, this also must apply to all women, no enhancing drug that makes these women perform as men. If IAAF took in to consideration of all the past violations of Easten Block , Chinese ,etc woman who all looked and performed as men, then Casters case is not all that special.
Tshifhiwa11/20/2009 9:10 AM
With due respect Steve, to me you sound like someone who is mentally contaminated, how can you utter such a hogwash statement? who are u to judge the poor young girl that she is not a women. you are a disgrace to this country. Are u an African nody? Africans are very sensetive, caring and full of humanity. In future, keep your verbal diarrhea to your self.
Larry11/20/2009 9:10 AM
Another cover up and another Lie. If Semenya had been cleared, they would be crowing it from the rooftops. We would have had Winnie, Chuene Malema, Et Al, giving it full blast. I would imagine that the next step is, Semenya was so hurt be the experience, she/He will retire from International events. What happens to the runners-up? I believe that this is not over yet?
imboriako11/20/2009 9:09 AM
Another incompetent making a fool of himself again...when will the clowns that run the circus ever get the point...stofile go back to being a gardener where your opinion doesn't count idiot...if caster was a woman the results would have been published ages ago as soon as possible after the circus came to town....the results are already known ...so don't make stupid comments ANC incompetents because once again you are making a fool of yourself to the world....eish man...we have a bunch if imbeciles that the press give coverage to,
Pat11/20/2009 9:04 AM
You guys don't seem to learn: She's not "100%" wonman (whatever that actually means). She's an intersex, and as such, she is what she's been raised to believe she is. So if she's raised as a girl, then she's a girl. Her extra testosterone gives her an added advantage; but as many people have pointed out, so does Michael Phelps' feet, Bolt's sprinting physique, Pierre Spies' genetics (although, those may have been "enhanced", if rumours are to be believed). I can't play prop: my genetics just haven't given me that physique. Simple. The question here is where does a genetic advantage begin and end, and how is it regulated? I say let her run...
Michelle11/20/2009 8:59 AM
Agree with Riaan. Why the secrecy?
mojo11/20/2009 8:59 AM
Here's a cover up in the making ! I agree with Steve, other women should object and refuse to run against her until the whole story is out in the open for full public scrutiny.
John11/20/2009 8:58 AM
To my opinion, `she` is a man and in that case they (IAAF, SA government) must let`her` compete as a man from now. and let `her` keep the previous world title.
Serobale11/20/2009 8:58 AM
There is nothing confidential about our champion's test result because it is said that there is no clarity about the runner's competitive future, obviously if she becomes banned from competitive athletics, or IAAF decides that she under goes surgery, then tell me what will be confidential about her result, if it is decided that she keeps her medal, championship and prize winnings, then let her compete unconditionally!!!!!
David11/20/2009 8:53 AM
It's just polotics. They say, it's in her hands and then, one day "she" will make a statemment, that after a carefull consideration, "she" decided not to run anymore. "she" will be than given a job at the local government. :-)
BeeGee11/20/2009 8:50 AM
Stay OUT of it Stofile. And everyone else for that matter. IAAF, ASA/SASCOC, and Caster need to deal with this. End of story. Why start the speculation that she COULD run again. Anything for a headline. How sad again. Keep to the facts of the tests and parameters set by IAAF. She has been through enough.
Mandisa11/20/2009 8:47 AM
I don't see anything wrong about Caster's gender, she competed because she didn't know what was hidden in her body. Lets leave her in peace, she has a right like everyone to compete with other women. GO CASTER GO! I as a proud SA woman would like to motivate you not to listen to those jelousy cows who do not want to see you UPHUMELELA.
Adams11/20/2009 8:46 AM
What an absolute imbecile. No its not in her hands, the rules are the rules, if they rule against her , then its all over. All she could do is undergo surgery, but this will affect the excessive testosterone produced , which will reduce her performance. Frightening when a minister comes up which such idiotic statements, get rid of him.
Pierre11/20/2009 8:43 AM
Before she entered for the World Championships she and ASA was well aware of the fact that she is not a woman. Why then go on and compete if you knew there will be a outcry from the world? I struggle to find sympathy for "her" and I feel that ASA should be blamed for the whole circus!!
CASTER IS AYOBA!11/20/2009 8:36 AM
Don't any of you learn?....whether she is a male or female makes no diffrence...she didn't choose to be born like that she is so.....PLEASE let the young lady live her life....LOOK @ URSELF B4 U START JUDGING OTHER PEOPLE...Caster I'm with you ALL da way...I support you no matter your gender...YOU GO GIRL! :)

Barry11/20/2009 8:21 AM
Statments like this add fuel to the fire, we can all read between the lines" future in her hands" simply means she will have to make teh descision to have an operation , I agree by doing this they arent protecting her as they havent answered teh questions and allow people to deal with it, especially her

@Steve, dont be so ignorant and naive-if full born man can claim femeninity (gays) and be accepted socailly as just that, and caster has done nothing to alter her self physically and these tests cant be conclusive on either side why not let it rest as is, she is a woman, raised as such. let it be!

I hope this statement is fully understood
Juan11/20/2009 8:08 AM
All a sportsman asks is for the playing fields to be level when competing against one another. Why can;t the SA public & ANC understand it. Fair is fair and the IAAF will force Stofile & his fellow comrades to comply, they can toi-toi all they like.
@Riaan11/20/2009 8:07 AM
Yes, they need to protect her. Seems that you don't get that.
Alibaba11/20/2009 8:07 AM
Stofile, you just wouldn't let this thing go away would you - and then in the end they will blame the racist media and IAAF again...at least this prove that black people can be racist as well as Diack is a black man...lol
Oom Gert11/20/2009 8:05 AM
Oh come on now! This just goes to show how stupid the sports minister is. Surely in his position he has to realise that she/he wil never again be able to compete in a womans race. Make the findings public!! Not that it is not public after the Australian press published it all.
erewhon11/20/2009 8:03 AM
Why doesn't the Minister remain quiet until the final statement from I.A.T.A. is released. He may get egg on his face-again.
Steve11/20/2009 7:57 AM
Don't these idiots learn. Semenya's not a woman. How can you ever consider that she will compete again against other genuine women. If this does happen, I hope other women athletes odject
Riaan11/20/2009 7:41 AM
If she is really 100% female why hide it from the public? Seems like they already know the results and is protecting her.
