Schoeman edged in thriller

Tokyo - The South African swimming team concluded the Tokyo leg of the FINA/Arena Swimming World Cup by adding a silver medal and two bronze medals to their tally on Thursday.

In one of the closest finishes of the evening, Roland Schoeman claimed the silver medal in the 50m freestyle. Touching the wall only 0.07 seconds behind Australia's Kyle Richardson and 0.01 seconds ahead of Germany's Steffen Deibler, Schoeman ended with a time of 21.49. Richardson's time was 21.42 and Deibler's 21.50.

After winning the bronze in the 100m individual medley yesterday, Darian Townsend added another two bronze medals to his name, this time in the 200m freestyle and 200m individual medley.

Townsend clocked 1:44.47 behind Japan's Takeshi Matsuda (1:43.93) and Canada's Brian Johns (1:44.13) in the 200m freestyle race and 1:55.21 behind Austria's Markus Rogan (1:53.85) and Brazil's Thiago Pereira (1:54.82) in the 200m individual medley.

Schoeman, Townsend, Ferns and Du Rand will be continuing to the fifth leg of the FINA/Arena Swimming World Cup taking place in Berlin (October 30-31) where they will be joined by Kathryn Meaklim and Mandy Loots.
